Best Suspension for Your LandCruiser: 79, 100, 200 & 300 Series Compared

"What's the best suspension for my LandCruiser?" is the question we answer more than any other — and the honest answer depends entirely on which Cruiser you drive and what you ask of it. A 79 Series single cab hauling tools needs completely different gear to a KDSS-equipped 200 towing a van. Here's our platform-by-platform guide, based on the setups we spec and ship every week.

Best suspension for the 79 Series (and 76/78)

The 70 Series runs a solid front axle on radius arms with a leaf-sprung rear (79) or coil rear (76/78 wagon variants) — simple, strong, and very responsive to upgrades. For work utes staying near standard height, a 2 inch kit with heavy-duty rear leafs rated for your tray load is the sweet spot: Tough Dog foam cell components deliver outstanding value here. For loaded touring rigs, Dobinsons kits with parabolic rear leaf options transform the famously harsh unladen ride. Going 3-4 inches? Budget for caster correction and an adjustable panhard rod — and note post-08/2016 single cabs need crossmember clearance work at 3 inches and above. Browse 79 Series suspension, 76 Series suspension or read the full 79 Series suspension guide.

Best suspension for the 100 Series

Choose by front end. The common 100 Series IFS runs torsion bar front suspension — the best upgrade combo is heavier torsion bars, quality shocks and upgraded rear coils, giving 2-3 inches of usable lift; find it all under 100 Series IFS suspension and torsion bars. The 105 Series kept solid axles front and rear, making it the tourer's pick — full coil conversion-style lift kits with constant-load rear springs suit it perfectly: see 105 Series suspension. We currently rank the 3 inch IFS kits among our most-fitted LandCruiser packages.

Best suspension for the 200 Series

One question decides everything: does your 200 have KDSS? Toyota's hydraulic sway bar system needs KDSS-compatible springs and careful setup (the vehicle can lean if springs are swapped without rebalancing), so always confirm compatibility before buying. Beyond that, the 200 responds superbly to a quality 2-3 inch kit — Dobinsons IMS monotubes for corrugation touring, or the MRA remote-reservoir range if you tow heavy and want damping adjustment. See 200 Series suspension and our 200/300 Series guide.

Best suspension for the 300 Series

Same KDSS logic applies, with one trap: e-KDSS is exclusive to the GR Sport, and standard aftermarket kits generally aren't compatible with it — physically verify what your 300 runs before ordering. For the rest of the range, 2 inch kits with GVM-appropriate spring rates are mature and well proven. Heavy tourers should consider rates matched to a GVM upgrade path. Browse 300 Series suspension.

Best suspension for the 80 Series and older Cruisers

The 80 Series remains the budget touring king — solid axles, coils all round, and enormous aftermarket support from 2 inch touring kits through to 4-6 inch builds (engineering required at those heights). The 60, 75 and 40 Series leaf-sprung platforms are equally well served with heavy-duty leaf packs and foam cell shocks. See 80 Series suspension or the 80/105 Series guide.

Which brand though?

Across LandCruisers, our default recommendations: Dobinsons for loaded touring and the widest spring-rate choice, Tough Dog for value and older platforms, premium remote-reservoir ranges (MRA, TD-R) for heavy towing and fast corrugations. The full reasoning is in our best 4WD suspension brands comparison — but on any Cruiser, correct spring rates for your actual load matter more than the badge on the shock.

What is the best lift kit for a 100 series LandCruiser?

For the IFS 100 Series: a 2-3 inch package combining upgraded torsion bars (or re-indexed factory bars for modest lifts), quality front shocks and constant-load rear coils. For heavy rear loads, add airbag helpers inside the coils. The 3 inch IFS kits are the most popular configuration we sell for this platform.

What is the best suspension upgrade for a 79 Series LandCruiser?

For most owners: a 2 inch kit with front coils rated for your bar/winch and rear leafs rated for your constant tray load — parabolic rear springs if unladen comfort matters. At 3-4 inches, add caster correction and an adjustable panhard, and check the single-cab crossmember requirement on post-08/2016 vehicles.

What is the best suspension for a 200 Series with KDSS?

KDSS-compatible kits from major brands — Dobinsons and Tough Dog both offer KDSS-specific spring sets. The critical part is correct installation and rebalancing of the KDSS system after fitting; done right, a KDSS 200 rides beautifully lifted. Confirm KDSS compatibility on every component before ordering.

Is a GVM upgrade worth it on a LandCruiser?

If you routinely run near (or over) the factory GVM fully loaded, yes — it's a legal and safety question as much as a suspension one. Pre-registration GVM upgrades are simplest; post-registration rules vary by state. The suspension components in a GVM package overlap heavily with a quality lift kit, so plan both together rather than buying twice.

Tell us your Cruiser, your load and your kind of touring — we'll spec the exact kit. Call 1300 120 020, or browse all LandCruiser suspension.
