Spring Rate Selection Guide

Selecting the correct spring rate is critical for optimal ride quality and component longevity — always base your selection on constant accessory load rather than occasional or maximum load scenarios. Constant load refers to accessories permanently fitted to your vehicle including bullbars, steel or aluminium trays, canopies, drawers, dual battery systems, long-range fuel tanks, underbody protection, and roof racks with permanent loads. Occasional loads like camping gear, recovery equipment, or towing should not influence spring rate selection as oversprung suspension results in harsh ride quality, premature bushing wear, and reduced shock absorber performance. When ordering, accurately calculate your front and rear constant loads separately to ensure proper spring matching.

Installation & Setup

Professional installation by a qualified 4WD suspension specialist is strongly recommended due to the complexity of this complete system upgrade. A full four-wheel alignment using precision laser equipment is mandatory after installation to ensure correct camber, caster, and toe settings that protect tyre life and maintain vehicle stability. All shock absorbers require a 500km break-in period during which damping characteristics will settle and seals will properly seat — avoid extreme off-road use during this initial period. For lifts approaching 3" (75mm), consider upgrading to adjustable upper control arms to restore optimal suspension geometry and maximize performance.

Features

Advanced MRA Monotube Remote Reservoir Technology

The MRA (Monotube Remote Adjustable) shock absorber represents the pinnacle of Dobinsons' engineering, derived directly from their championship-winning motorsport program. Unlike conventional twin-tube designs, the monotube configuration positions the piston within a single large-diameter pressure tube, eliminating the inefficiencies of oil transfer between chambers. The remote reservoir adds substantial oil capacity and surface area for heat dissipation, preventing shock fade during extended off-road sessions or continuous corrugated road driving. The 50mm bore diameter and high-pressure nitrogen gas charge deliver exceptional damping force consistency across the entire stroke range, maintaining vehicle control whether you're negotiating rock steps, absorbing jump landings, or managing highway expansion joints at speed.

3-Way Damping Adjustment System Explained

High-Speed Compression: Controls damping during rapid shaft movement such as hitting sharp-edged rocks, potholes, or landing from compressions. Increasing high-speed compression prevents harsh bottoming and maintains chassis stability during aggressive driving, while reducing it allows the suspension to absorb sharp impacts more compliantly for improved traction over stutter bumps.

Low-Speed Compression: Manages damping during slower suspension movements including body roll in corners, brake dive, acceleration squat, and gradual load transfers. This adjustment is critical for towing stability, payload control, and overall ride comfort on highways and graded roads. Increasing low-speed compression firms the ride and reduces body movement, while decreasing it softens the suspension for unladen touring comfort.

Rebound Damping: Controls the speed at which the shock extends after compression, directly affecting tyre contact patch consistency, suspension oscillation control, and vehicle pitch. Proper rebound tuning prevents pogo-ing over whoops, maintains traction on undulating terrain, and keeps the vehicle composed during rapid direction changes. Each adjustment knob provides tactile clicks for repeatable settings, allowing you to record optimal configurations for different scenarios and quickly return to proven setups.

Premium Component Construction

Every element of the MRA shock absorber system has been engineered for maximum performance and longevity in Australian conditions. The 6063-T6 aluminum reservoir is precision-honed to aerospace tolerances, creating a mirror-smooth bore that minimizes friction and wear on the floating piston. The revolutionary Carbon Fibre/PTFE/Disulphide composite wear band operates with significantly less friction than conventional PTFE-only designs, reducing heat generation and improving small-bump compliance. The 3-stage FKM-HNBR shaft seal system combines Fluorocarbon (FKM) and Hydrogenated Nitrile (HNBR) materials that resist degradation from UV exposure, ozone, petroleum products, and extreme temperature cycling from -40°C to +150°C. Chrome-hardened piston rods with industry-leading 20-micron chrome plating resist stone chips and corrosion even after years of beach driving and water crossings.

FAQs

Yes, this kit is specifically engineered for Isuzu D-Max Series II models from 2021 onwards, covering all variants including SX, LS-M, LS-U, and X-Terrain with the 3.0L turbo diesel engine. The kit is designed around the factory suspension geometry and mounting points of the Series II platform. If you're unsure about your specific model year or variant, our team can verify fitment using your VIN number — simply contact us before ordering to confirm compatibility.

This Dobinsons MRA kit delivers an adjustable 50-75mm (2"-3") lift over standard ride height, with the final height depending on your selected spring rates and constant accessory load. Vehicles with minimal accessories will sit closer to 75mm lift, while heavily equipped vehicles with bullbars, winches, and touring gear will settle around 50-65mm. The adjustable coil and leaf spring options allow precise height tuning to suit your specific build. Keep in mind that lifts approaching or exceeding 75mm (3") may require engineering certification in some Australian states and are intended primarily for off-road use.

This comprehensive kit includes four Dobinsons MRA adjustable monotube remote reservoir shock absorbers (front and rear pairs), heavy-duty front coil springs, raised multi-leaf rear spring pack, four high-tensile U-bolts with hardware, polyurethane leaf spring bushings, shock mounting hardware, and remote reservoir brackets. You'll also receive detailed installation instructions and a damping adjustment guide. Additional components like extended brake lines, modified bump stops, upper control arms, or sway bar extensions are not included but may be required depending on your final lift height and existing vehicle modifications.

Absolutely — this kit is engineered specifically for touring, towing, and heavy payload applications when matched with appropriate spring rates. The adjustable MRA shocks allow you to increase low-speed compression damping when towing, providing exceptional stability and level stance with caravans up to 3,500kg. The multiple spring rate options ensure you can match spring stiffness to your constant accessory load, preventing sag while maintaining ride quality. For maximum versatility with varying loads, consider pairing this kit with airbag suspension for on-demand load leveling capability that complements the adjustable damping system.

For 50mm (2") lifts, upgraded control arms are typically not mandatory but are beneficial for optimizing suspension geometry and maximizing tyre clearance. For lifts approaching or exceeding 75mm (3"), adjustable upper control arms become highly recommended to restore proper camber and caster angles, improve steering feel, and prevent accelerated tyre wear. Control arms also provide additional clearance for larger tyres and allow fine-tuning of suspension geometry for specific applications. Our suspension specialists can assess your requirements based on your target lift height and intended use.

Yes, a complete four-wheel alignment using precision laser equipment is absolutely mandatory after installing any lift kit. The suspension lift alters camber, caster, and toe angles significantly from factory specifications, which will cause rapid and uneven tyre wear, poor handling characteristics, and potential safety issues if not corrected. Choose a workshop experienced with lifted 4WDs who understand the specific alignment requirements for touring and off-road vehicles. Alignment should be rechecked after the initial 500km settling period when spring rates have stabilized under load.

Yes — selecting the correct spring rate is critical and must be based on your constant accessory load, which includes permanently fitted equipment like bullbars, winches, trays, canopies, drawers, dual batteries, long-range tanks, and roof racks with fixed loads. During checkout, you'll select separate front and rear spring rates matched to your actual constant loads. Avoid selecting springs based on occasional loads like camping gear or maximum towing capacity, as oversprung suspension results in harsh ride quality and premature component wear. Our team can provide load calculation guidance if you're unsure about your requirements.

This 50-75mm lift typically accommodates tyres up to 285/70R17 or 265/70R18 (approximately 33") on standard wheel offsets without modifications, though exact fitment depends on wheel offset, tyre brand/model, and final lift height achieved. Some minor trimming of plastic inner guards may be required for full articulation clearance at maximum lock. For larger tyres or aggressive wheel offsets, additional modifications including body mount chop, bumper modifications, or upgraded control arms may be necessary. We recommend test-fitting tyres at full lock and compression before committing to a wheel/tyre package.

Dobinsons provides comprehensive manufacturer warranty coverage on all components in this kit, with shock absorbers covered for defects in materials and workmanship under normal use conditions. Warranty duration and specific terms are detailed in the documentation included with your kit. To maintain warranty validity, the kit must be installed by a qualified professional, used within specified load ratings, and serviced according to recommended intervals. Warranty does not cover damage from accident, misuse, racing, or failure to maintain proper wheel alignment and suspension servicing.

Yes, the Dobinsons MRA kit excels as a daily driver suspension when properly set up, thanks to its adjustable damping that allows you to optimize ride quality for unladen highway cruising. Set the compression adjusters to softer settings for comfortable daily commuting, then firm them up when loading the vehicle or heading off-road. The matched spring rates provide predictable handling characteristics and maintain factory-like ride comfort when correctly specified for your constant load. The advanced monotube design also eliminates the fade and degradation common in budget lift kits during extended highway driving. However, remember that any lifted vehicle will experience some changes to handling characteristics compared to stock, including increased body roll and altered steering response.

Perfect Setup for Our Family Adventures

By: Shane D on 8 June 2026
Just finished running this Dobinsons lift kit through its paces on a two-week trip down the Gibb River Road with the family and couldn't be happier. The adjustable damping meant we could soften things up when the kids were complaining about the corrugations, then firm it back up when towing the camper trailer. Fitment was spot-on for our 2022 D-Max and the ride quality is leagues ahead of the factory setup, especially when loaded up with all our camping gear and water.
