Tough Dog rear shock absorbers for the Land Rover Defender 110 County (November 1984 - 1991), sold as a pair and covering up to approximately 30mm of lift. Choose your shock line - Foam Cell, 40mm Adjustable, 45mm Adjustable or Ralph 53mm - and your lower bush type: the Defender came with either conical lower bushes or flat 45mm-diameter bushes, and Tough Dog makes each shock for both.
On a Land Rover Defender 110 & 130 1984-2016 the shock absorbers do the hard yards: every corrugation, every pothole, every loaded kilometre goes through them. When they fade, the vehicle floats over undulations and takes longer to settle after each hit.
The Foam Cell is Tough Dog's twin-tube workhorse: a microcellular foam insert takes the place of the usual air gap inside the shock body, so the oil can't foam up as heat builds and the damping stays consistent on long corrugated stretches. The 40mm Adjustable adds 9-stage adjustable valving – run it softer for unloaded around-town driving, then firm it up when the vehicle is loaded for touring, without taking anything apart. The 45mm big-bore Adjustable carries more oil in a larger body with the same 9-stage adjustment, aimed at vehicles that work harder or carry weight more often. The big-bore Ralph is the largest twin-tube in the range – more oil volume and a bigger piston for sustained heavy touring use.
Shocks are sold and fitted as a pair – replacing one side only gives you uneven damping across the axle. While the old ones are off, check the bushes and mounts; hardware that's had years of flex is cheap to do at the same time.

Look at the shock's lower rubber bushes (Tough Dog guide): if they are conical in shape and fit into a metal housing, order the Conical version; if they are flat and approximately 45mm in diameter, order the Flat 45mm version. Send us a photo if unsure.
Foam Cell is the all-round choice for touring – the foam insert stops the oil aerating so damping stays consistent on corrugations. Step up to the 9-stage Adjustable if the vehicle swings between unloaded weekdays and loaded trips and you want to tune the damping to match, or to the bigger-bore options if it works hard, hot and heavy most of the time.
The listed price covers both sides – always replace left and right together so the axle is evenly damped and sprung. It's a bolt-in job for a competent home mechanic or any workshop; check bushes, mounts and brake-line slack while everything is apart.
