Tough Dog steering damper for the Jeep Wrangler TJ (October 1996 - 2007). Choose the Return-to-Centre damper (SS5922-P/S), which self-centres the steering after bumps and ruts and helps tame death wobble, or the SV 9-Stage Adjustable (SV5922) to tune steering feel for tyre size and terrain.
A steering damper's job is to soak up the kickback that big tyres and rough ground feed into the steering box – the difference is obvious the first time a rut grabs a front wheel and the wheel doesn't rip at your hands.
The heavy-duty EXT replacement runs a 35mm bore with Tough Dog's foam cell insert to resist fade. The Return-to-Centre version adds a self-centring action that helps the steering settle straight and reduces shimmy on rough surfaces, and the SV9 gives you 9-stage adjustable damping to match tyre size and driving.
One honest note: a damper controls kickback – it doesn't fix a steering wobble caused by worn bushes, bearings or a tired panhard. If you've got a shake that comes on at speed, inspect those first; the damper is the finishing touch, not the cure.
