Spring Rate Selection Guide

Selecting the correct spring rate is critical for achieving optimal ride quality, load support, and component longevity. Base your spring selection on the constant load your Hilux carries at all times — not occasional loads like camping gear or towing equipment. Common front-end accessories that affect spring rate selection include steel bull bars, winches, auxiliary batteries, UHF aerials, driving lights, intercooler upgrades, and aftermarket bumpers. Overestimating your load and choosing excessively heavy spring rates will result in a harsh ride, premature wear on bushings and steering components, and reduced comfort for daily driving. If you regularly switch between loaded and unloaded configurations, consider complementing your suspension with airbag suspension for adjustable load support without compromising base ride quality.

Installation & Setup

Professional installation by a qualified 4WD suspension specialist is strongly recommended to ensure correct fitment, torque specifications, and safety. While experienced DIY mechanics can complete the installation with appropriate tools and equipment, proper spring compression equipment and safety procedures are essential. A full four-wheel alignment is mandatory after installing these front struts to restore correct camber, caster, and toe settings — this protects tyre life, steering feel, and vehicle stability. Allow a 500km break-in period for springs to settle and dampers to reach optimal performance before final ride height assessment. For vehicles with increased lift or significant accessory weight, pairing these struts with upgraded control arms can improve wheel articulation, correct suspension geometry, and enhance off-road capability.

Why Choose Toughdog?

Toughdog has earned its reputation as Australia's number one suspension system through decades of real-world testing across the continent's most punishing terrain — from corrugated outback tracks to coastal 4WD beaches and high-country trails. Every Toughdog component is engineered to Australian conditions and backed by comprehensive warranty coverage, making them the trusted choice for serious tourers, outback adventurers, and hard-working tradespeople who demand reliability when it matters most. Explore the complete range of shocks, springs, and lift components at the Toughdog brand page to build your ideal suspension setup.

Who Is This For?

These front assembled struts are ideal for Toyota Hilux Rogue and GR Sport owners who carry constant front-end accessories like bull bars and winches, and need reliable load support without sacrificing daily driving comfort. They're equally suited to weekend tourers heading bush, tradespeople carrying tools and equipment, and caravan towers who need a level, controlled front end when hitched up. If you frequently switch between heavy and light loads, consider adding airbag suspension to your rear axle for on-the-fly load adjustment without compromising your primary suspension setup.

Ready to upgrade your Toyota Hilux suspension? Order these Toughdog Front Assembled Struts today with confidence — backed by Australian stock, fast dispatch nationwide, and expert technical support from 4WD Suspension's experienced team. FAQs

These front assembled struts are specifically engineered for Toyota Hilux N80 Wide Body Rogue and GR Sport models manufactured from August 2022 onwards. They are not compatible with earlier N80 Hilux models or narrow-body variants due to differences in suspension geometry and mounting points. If you're unsure about your vehicle's build date or variant, check your compliance plate or contact our team with your VIN number for confirmation. We can verify exact fitment and recommend the correct spring rate based on your specific accessory configuration.

These Toughdog front assembled struts are primarily designed as a load-correction and ride-quality upgrade rather than a dedicated lift kit. Final ride height depends on the spring rate selected and your vehicle's constant front-end load — vehicles with heavy bull bars and winches will sit lower than those with minimal accessories. Generally, expect ride height to be maintained at or slightly above factory specifications when correctly matched to your load. If you're seeking significant lift for larger tyres or increased ground clearance, contact our suspension specialists to discuss complete lift kit options that include matching rear components and any required geometry correction parts.

This kit includes two fully assembled front strut units, each comprising a Toughdog foam cell shock absorber, coil spring (in your selected rate), top strut mount with bearing, rubber dust boot, bump stop, and all necessary mounting hardware. The struts arrive pre-assembled from the factory, saving installation time and ensuring correct spring preload and compression. You will need to select your preferred spring rate at the time of ordering based on your vehicle's constant front-end accessory load. Note that this kit covers front suspension only — rear shocks, leaf springs, or airbags are sold separately and should be matched to your front setup for balanced performance.

Yes, when paired with appropriately rated rear suspension components, these Toughdog front struts contribute to improved towing stability and control. The foam cell dampers resist fade under extended load and provide consistent damping during highway towing, while the correctly selected spring rate prevents front-end sag when your towball is loaded. However, the front struts alone won't address rear squat or sway — you should match them with upgraded rear leaf springs or consider adding airbag suspension to your rear axle for adjustable load support. A balanced front-to-rear suspension setup is essential for safe, controlled towing with proper weight distribution and steering response.

For most Toyota Hilux Rogue and GR Sport applications running close to factory ride height, the standard control arms will function adequately with these Toughdog front struts. However, if you're combining these struts with a body lift, significant rear lift, or planning serious off-road articulation, upgraded control arms can correct suspension geometry, improve wheel travel, and reduce stress on ball joints and bushings. Aftermarket control arms also offer additional caster adjustment for improved steering feel and stability, particularly beneficial for vehicles carrying heavy front-end accessories. Contact our team to discuss whether control arm upgrades are recommended for your specific build and intended use.

Yes, a full four-wheel alignment is absolutely mandatory after installing these front struts. Removing and replacing front suspension components affects camber, caster, and toe settings, which directly impact tyre wear, steering feel, vehicle stability, and braking performance. Even if ride height remains similar to factory specifications, suspension geometry changes during installation require professional realignment to manufacturer specifications. Book your alignment with a qualified 4WD suspension specialist who can properly assess and adjust your Hilux's geometry using calibrated equipment. Skipping this critical step will result in premature tyre wear, wandering steering, and potential safety issues.

Select your spring rate based on the constant accessory load your Hilux carries at all times — not occasional loads like camping gear or tools you remove between trips. Measure or estimate the combined weight of permanent front-end accessories including bull bars, winches, auxiliary batteries, upgraded intercoolers, driving lights, UHF aerials, and aftermarket bumpers. Common front-end accessory packages typically range from 40-80kg, and our team can recommend the appropriate spring rate once you provide this information. Critically, do not overestimate your load by factoring in towing or occasional cargo — choosing excessively heavy springs will result in a harsh, uncomfortable ride and accelerated wear on steering and suspension components during daily driving.

These front struts are designed primarily for load correction and ride quality improvement rather than significant lift for tyre clearance. While they may provide modest additional clearance compared to worn factory suspension, they won't deliver the lift height required for substantially larger tyres without body or suspension lift components. The 2022-onwards Toyota Hilux Rogue and GR Sport models have generous factory wheel arch clearance, typically accommodating 265-275mm tyre widths without modification. If you're planning to fit 285mm or larger tyres, you'll likely need additional lift components, wheel arch trimming, or offset wheels to avoid rubbing during full suspension articulation. Contact our team with your target tyre size for specific clearance advice and recommended complementary lift components.

These Toughdog front assembled struts are backed by the manufacturer's comprehensive warranty, covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal use conditions. Warranty terms typically cover the shock absorber body, seals, piston components, and coil springs against manufacturing defects, though specific duration and conditions vary by component type. To maintain warranty validity, ensure professional installation by a qualified technician, retain proof of purchase and installation records, and follow recommended service intervals including visual inspections for leaks or damage. Warranty does not typically cover wear from modified vehicles, competition use, or damage from incorrect installation or accessory loads exceeding the selected spring rate capacity.

Absolutely — when correctly matched to your vehicle's constant accessory load, these Toughdog front struts deliver excellent daily driving comfort and highway manners alongside their load-carrying capability. The foam cell shock technology provides controlled damping without harshness, and the Australian-tuned valving balances responsive handling with ride compliance over typical road surfaces. They're designed for dual-purpose vehicles that serve as daily drivers during the week and touring rigs on weekends, making them ideal for tradies, families, and adventure seekers who refuse to compromise comfort for capability. Just ensure you select the appropriate spring rate — overly heavy springs chosen for loads you don't actually carry will result in an unnecessarily firm ride that detracts from daily driving enjoyment.

Fitted these Toughdog assembled struts to our 2023 Hilux GR Sport before our trip through the High Country and the difference is night and day. The ride quality is so much better with a full load of camping gear and the kids in the back, no more bouncing around on corrugated tracks. Installation was straightforward and they've handled everything from beach sand to rocky mountain trails without missing a beat.

Perfect Upgrade for Our Family Tourer

By: Nicole F on 9 June 2026
Recently fitted these Toughdog assembled front struts to our 2023 Hilux Rogue and the difference is night and day. We've done a few trips up to the high country since installation and the ride quality with the roof tent and camping gear loaded up is so much more composed than the factory setup. The kids even commented they weren't getting bounced around as much on the corrugated tracks. Well worth the investment for anyone doing regular touring.
