Spring Rate Selection Guide

When upgrading your Cannon's suspension, selecting the appropriate spring rate depends on your typical constant load carried in the front-end. These Toughdog struts are designed to work with standard or upgraded coil springs, and should be matched to your specific accessory weight. Common front accessories affecting spring selection include steel bull bars (20-40kg), heavy-duty winches (25-35kg), auxiliary battery systems (15-25kg), long-range fuel tanks, driving lights, UHF aerials, and roof racks with gear. Calculate your total constant front load, then choose springs rated 200-300kg above your accessory weight to maintain optimal ride height and prevent sagging.

Installation & Setup

Professional installation by a qualified mechanic or experienced DIY installer with appropriate spring compressor tools is recommended for this front strut upgrade. Wheel alignment is mandatory after installation to ensure correct camber, caster, and toe settings, preventing uneven tyre wear and maintaining steering accuracy. Allow a 500km break-in period for seals to properly seat and hydraulic oil to distribute through the valving circuits before making any damping or ride quality assessments. For comprehensive suspension upgrades, consider pairing these struts with upgraded control arms to correct geometry at lifted heights and maximize suspension travel.

FAQs

These Toughdog front suspension struts are engineered specifically for the Great Wall Cannon (also known as GWM Cannon) from 2020 onwards, covering all variants including the 2.0L turbo diesel engine. The struts feature direct OEM-equivalent mounting points for bolt-in fitment without modifications. To confirm exact compatibility with your specific model year, cab configuration, and any factory suspension options, use our online parts finder or contact our technical team with your VIN number. We can verify fitment and recommend matching rear suspension components for a complete upgrade.

These Toughdog front struts are designed as direct replacement shock absorbers and do not provide lift height on their own—lift is determined by your spring selection. The struts feature extended shock travel to accommodate lifted coil springs, typically supporting 0-50mm front lift when paired with appropriate raised coils. If you're installing a complete lift kit, these struts will maintain optimal damping control at the elevated ride height. For specific lift recommendations based on your build requirements, our suspension specialists can help you select matched springs and struts that achieve your target height while maintaining proper suspension geometry and ride quality.

This kit includes two complete Toughdog front suspension struts (left and right) featuring nitrogen gas charged dampers, chrome-plated piston rods, high-temperature seals, and corrosion-resistant powder coat finish. The struts come ready to install with integrated mounting hardware for direct OEM replacement. Please note that upper strut mounts, spring seats, bump stops, and coil springs are sold separately and should be reused from your existing suspension or upgraded as needed. All necessary installation instructions are included, and we can recommend any additional components required for your specific application or lift height goals.

Yes, these Toughdog front struts are specifically engineered to handle the increased front-end loads and weight distribution changes that occur during towing operations. The heavy-duty nitrogen gas charge and precision valving maintain consistent damping performance under load, reducing front-end dive during braking and improving steering control with a trailer attached. The struts work effectively with factory or upgraded rear suspension to balance your vehicle's handling characteristics when towing caravans, boats, or heavy trailers. For optimal towing performance, we recommend upgrading both front and rear suspension components together, and potentially adding airbag suspension at the rear for on-demand load support and level adjustment.

Control arm upgrades are not mandatory for strut replacement at standard ride height, but become important considerations if you're also installing lifted coil springs beyond 30mm. At standard height or mild lifts, your factory control arms will continue to function correctly with these Toughdog struts. However, lifts exceeding 30-40mm can alter suspension geometry angles, potentially causing increased wear on ball joints and bushings. Upgraded adjustable control arms allow you to correct camber and caster angles, restore proper geometry, and maximize suspension articulation off-road. Our team can assess your specific lift height and intended use to recommend whether control arm upgrades would benefit your build.

Yes, professional wheel alignment is absolutely mandatory after installing new front suspension struts, regardless of whether you're maintaining stock ride height or adding lift. Even direct replacement struts can slightly alter suspension geometry during installation, affecting camber, caster, and toe settings. Incorrect alignment causes rapid and uneven tyre wear, poor steering response, and potentially unsafe handling characteristics. Book your alignment with a workshop experienced in 4WD suspension who can properly set angles to manufacturer specifications or adjust for lifted applications. Most alignment shops recommend rechecking alignment after the initial 500km break-in period to account for any settling that occurs as new components seat into position.

While this listing is specifically for the front struts only, these Toughdog dampers are designed to work effectively with a range of spring rates to match your Great Wall Cannon's specific load profile. When selecting matching coil springs separately, you can choose from constant load, medium load, or heavy-duty ratings depending on permanent front accessories like bull bars, winches, and touring equipment. The struts' precision valving adapts to different spring rates while maintaining controlled damping and ride quality. Our suspension specialists can help you calculate your constant front load and recommend the optimal spring rate that will work perfectly with these struts, ensuring your Cannon sits at the correct ride height without sagging or sitting too high.

These front struts themselves don't determine tyre clearance—that depends on your total lift height achieved through spring selection and any body modifications. When paired with lifted coil springs providing 30-50mm of front lift, most Great Wall Cannon models can accommodate 31-32 inch tyres with minimal rubbing, though some trimming of plastic wheel arch liners may be required at full lock. Larger tyre fitment also depends on wheel offset, tyre width, and suspension compression during articulation. For specific tyre size recommendations based on your planned lift height and wheel specifications, consult with our team who can provide guidance based on proven Cannon builds and real-world clearance testing.

Toughdog backs these front suspension struts with their comprehensive manufacturer's warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal operating conditions. The warranty period and specific terms are detailed in the documentation included with your struts, and coverage is valid Australia-wide through authorized dealers like 4WD Suspension. To maintain warranty validity, struts must be installed correctly by a qualified technician, used within their design parameters, and serviced according to manufacturer recommendations. Warranty does not cover damage from accidents, modifications, racing use, or wear items like seals and bushings that naturally deteriorate over time. Contact us for complete warranty details and registration information to ensure your investment is fully protected.

Absolutely—these Toughdog front struts are engineered to deliver excellent ride quality for daily driving while maintaining the capability for serious off-road and heavy-load use when required. The precision nitrogen gas valving provides controlled damping that absorbs road imperfections, reduces vibration transmission, and maintains comfort during highway cruising and urban commuting. Unlike some competition-focused suspensions that sacrifice on-road comfort, Toughdog's engineering philosophy balances everyday drivability with weekend adventure capability. The struts eliminate the common issues of factory suspension deterioration like poor body control, excessive bounce, and wallowing through corners, making your Great Wall Cannon feel more planted, stable, and confidence-inspiring in all driving conditions from school runs to remote touring.

Solid Upgrade for Remote Track Work

By: Penny O on 17 June 2026
Been running these Toughdog front struts on my Cannon for about 8 months now, including a proper beating through the Simpson and Canning Stock Route. The nitrogen gas setup handles corrugations and washouts way better than the factory units ever did, and they're still holding up perfectly with the extra weight of long-range tanks and recovery gear. Worth every cent for anyone doing serious remote travel.

Perfect Upgrade for Our Family Adventures

By: Chris H on 16 June 2026
Just fitted these Toughdog front struts to our Cannon before our trip down the coast and the difference is night and day. The ride quality is so much smoother on corrugated tracks, and the kids actually stopped complaining about the bumps on our last beach run. Really impressed with how well they handle the weight when we're loaded up with camping gear and the rooftop tent.

Brilliant upgrade for the Cannon's front end

By: Chris H on 13 June 2026
Been running these Toughdog front struts through the Simpson and up through the Cape, and they've completely transformed how the Cannon handles corrugations and washouts. The nitrogen gas setup soaks up the punishment far better than the factory units, especially when loaded up with recovery gear and long-range tanks. Fitment was spot-on with no dramas, and after 8,000km of proper outback work, they're still performing like new.

Massive Improvement for Our Family Camping Trips

By: Rachel M on 11 June 2026
Fitted these Toughdog front struts to our Cannon before our last trip down the Victorian High Country and the difference is night and day. The ride quality is so much better when loaded up with camping gear and the kids, and they handled the corrugated tracks brilliantly without the constant jarring we used to cop. Really impressed with how they've transformed the front end, especially considering the price point compared to some of the bigger name brands.

Best upgrade I've done to the Cannon

By: Jason C on 10 June 2026
Had these Toughdog struts fitted about three months back and the difference is night and day. Load the tray up with tools and materials every day and the front end doesn't sag anymore like it did with the factory setup. Ride quality on the highway is noticeably smoother too, and they handled a recent trip out to a remote job site on some pretty rough tracks without any dramas.
