The Ford Ranger PX (PX1 2011-2015, PX2 2015-2018, PX3 2018-2022) is one of Australia's most towed-with utes, and its suspension complaints reflect that: a rear end that sags under a van or loaded tub, factory shocks that fade on long towing runs, and front-end geometry questions once a lift goes in. The Ranger runs independent coil-strut front suspension and rear leaf springs, so the fixes follow the same logic as other IFS utes - but the spring rates and known weak points are Ranger-specific.
Owners report the rear dropping 40-50mm under a loaded tub or van ball weight, with worn factory springs eventually sitting near the bump stops. Factory rear leafs are tuned for unladen comfort, and they lose height with hard use.
The proper fix is heavy-duty rear leaf springs rated for your ball weight and constant load, fitted as part of a matched kit like the Bilstein 2" kit for PX1/PX2. Airbag helpers level a variable towing load on top of a healthy spring - they are not a substitute for one.
Sustained towing works shocks hard, and the factory dampers heat up and lose control - the van starts pushing the ute around. Monotube designs with bigger oil volume resist fade: the Dobinsons IFP adjustable kit (PX1/PX2) uses internal floating piston monotubes, and the MRA remote-reservoir kit for the PX3 adds external damping adjustment you can firm up for towing and back off for the daily drive.
Like all IFS utes, lifting the Ranger changes camber, caster and CV angles together. Around 2" aligns fine on factory arms; push toward 3" and upper control arms approach their limits - aftermarket UCAs restore geometry, and a diff drop is worth considering to protect CVs at full height. Alignment after fitting is mandatory, then again after the 500km settle.
Suspension lifts beyond your state's allowable limit (commonly 50mm without certification, less once combined with larger tyres) may require engineering approval under the applicable light vehicle modification rules (VSB14/NCOP). Check your state's requirements before buying - an uncertified over-height lift can affect insurance and roadworthiness. We flag this on every 3" and 4" capable kit we sell.
Springs rated for the load first; airbags on top only if the load varies a lot. Airbags over flat springs just mask the problem and stress the chassis mounts.
PX1 and PX2 (2011-2018) are largely common; the PX3 (2018-2022) has its own spec in most kits. The 2022-on Next-Gen Ranger is a different platform entirely - buy generation-specific.
Generally 2"-3" with the right offset; check guard clearance at full lock and your state's combined lift-plus-tyre legality before committing.
