The Mazda BT-50 is three different utes wearing one badge, and buying suspension for the wrong one is the most common mistake owners make. The 2006-2011 generation is Ford Courier/Ranger-based; the 2011-2020 UP/UR shares its platform with the Ford Ranger PX; and the 2020-on TF generation is mechanically an Isuzu D-Max. Suspension complaints - and parts - follow the donor platform, not the badge.
The 2011-2020 UP/UR shares chassis, suspension geometry and most components with the Ranger PX - so its known issues are Ranger issues: rear leaf sag under tow ball weight and shocks that fade on long towing runs. The 2020-on TF is a D-Max twin: firm ride, leaf rear that still sags loaded, and the same IFS lift limits. Kits are engineered per platform - Toughdog 2" for 2011-2020, Toughdog for 2020-on - and are never interchangeable between generations.
Same cause on every generation: factory rear leafs rated for occasional payload, asked to carry a permanent one. The fix is rear springs rated for your constant load in a matched kit - the Dobinsons MRA adjustable 2"-3" (2012-2020) adds remote-reservoir damping you can firm up for towing, and the Nitro Gas 2" kit (2020-on) covers the D-Max-based ute.
All BT-50 generations run IFS fronts, so the usual rules: about 2" on factory geometry, aftermarket upper control arms beyond that, diff drop worth considering at 3", mandatory alignment after fitting and again post-settle.
Suspension lifts beyond your state's allowable limit (commonly 50mm without certification, less once combined with larger tyres) may require engineering approval under the applicable light vehicle modification rules (VSB14/NCOP). Check your state's requirements before buying - an uncertified over-height lift can affect insurance and roadworthiness. We flag this on every 3" and 4" capable kit we sell.
For 2011-2020 (UP/UR) - largely yes, it is a Ranger PX under the skin, though always confirm the specific part. The 2020-on TF takes D-Max-family components instead. The badge tells you nothing; the generation tells you everything.
It inherits the D-Max's firm factory tune. Springs matched to your actual load plus quality valved shocks improve both comfort and control.
Typically with a 2" lift and the right offset - check clearance at full lock and your state's legality for combined lift and tyre size.
