Shock absorbers do not fail overnight. They lose damping force gradually over tens of thousands of kilometres, and because the change is slow, drivers adapt without realising the vehicle has become bouncier, floatier and slower to stop. On a 4WD that tours loaded or spends time on corrugations, shocks wear faster still — heat is what kills them, and heavy loads on rough roads generate plenty of it. Here are the six signs worth acting on.
The classic symptom. A healthy shock settles the body in about one bounce after a speed hump or dip. If your 4WD floats, wallows or rocks two or three times, the dampers are no longer controlling the springs. The old bounce test — push down hard on a corner of the vehicle and watch how it recovers — is crude but still telling: more than one rebound means the shock on that corner is suspect.
Worn front shocks let the nose plunge when you brake, lengthening stopping distances and unsettling the vehicle just when you need stability. Worn rears let the tail squat hard under acceleration or when towing. If braking suddenly feels less composed than it used to, do not just look at the pads — look at the dampers.
A shock that cannot hold the tyre against the road lets it patter and skip, which shows up as cupped or scalloped wear patches around the tread. If your tyre shop mentions cupping, have the shocks checked before you blame alignment alone.
Get under the vehicle and look. A light film of moisture on the shock body can be normal; oil visibly streaking down the body means the seal has failed and the shock is finished. While you are there, check for dented bodies from rock strikes, worn bushes at the mounts, and any shaft pitting or rust.
A shock that feels fine around town but turns loose and floaty twenty minutes down a corrugated road is overheating — the oil thins, damping falls away, and control goes with it. This is the failure mode that catches touring 4WDs, and it is the main reason serious tourers upgrade to shocks with more oil capacity. Knocking over bumps often traces back to worn shock bushes or loose mounts rather than the shock internals — a cheap fix if caught early, but left alone it hammers out the mounting points. A quick visual check of the bushes at both ends of each shock takes minutes.
There is no fixed number: highway-driven vehicles might see 80,000–100,000 km from quality shocks, while a loaded tourer doing regular outback trips can cook standard-duty dampers in half that. Treat 50,000 km as a sensible checkpoint for a working 4WD, and always inspect after a big remote trip.
Replace shocks in pairs (both fronts or both rears at minimum) so damping stays even side to side.
