The Toyota Prado (90/95, 120, and 150 Series) and its retro cousin the FJ Cruiser share the same DNA: IFS front, five-link coil rear, and a family-wagon factory tune that goes soft the moment touring weight goes in. The 150 adds one more variable - KDSS - that changes which lift kit you can fit. Here are the problems owners actually report and the correct fixes.
The coil rear is tuned for family comfort, and a constant load - drawers, fridge, long-range tank, ball weight - sits it down and sets the nose high. Constant-load rear coils in a matched kit fix it: Toughdog 150 Series kit, 120 Series kit, or the 90/95 kit for the older wagons. The FJ Cruiser (2006-2016) takes its own spec - the Toughdog FJ kit.
Yes. KDSS (the hydraulic sway bar system on many 150 Series) needs KDSS-compatible spring and shock specs, and lifted KDSS vehicles are prone to a lean - typically the right side sitting lower after the lift. The lean is correctable by rebalancing the system during installation, but it is the reason KDSS Prados should be lifted with kits specified for KDSS, like the Dobinsons MRA 2" 150 Series kit, and fitted by someone who knows the rebalance procedure.
IFS rules again: about 2" on factory geometry; UCAs beyond that; diff drop worth considering at 3", where extended brake lines and bump stop extensions also enter the picture at the rear. Alignment after fitting and after settle.
Suspension lifts beyond your state's allowable limit (commonly 50mm without certification, less once combined with larger tyres) may require engineering approval under the applicable light vehicle modification rules (VSB14/NCOP). Check your state's requirements before buying - an uncertified over-height lift can affect insurance and roadworthiness. We flag this on every 3" and 4" capable kit we sell.
Almost never. Lifted KDSS vehicles commonly develop a lean that is corrected by rebalancing the KDSS system - a quick procedure during or after installation, not a parts problem.
They are close relatives but the FJ has its own spring and shock specs - buy FJ-specific.
No - each series has its own spec, and within the 150, KDSS vs non-KDSS matters. Match series and KDSS status exactly.
