Description

The Dobinsons Monotube IFP Rear Shocks suit Isuzu D-Max 2012-6/2020 models and use Internal Floating Piston technology to separate oil and gas within a single monotube body, cutting heat-related fade on long touring runs and heavy tow. Each shock is a direct bolt-in replacement for the factory rear damper, restoring consistent damping control whether you're loaded with camping gear or running near GVM. These premium shock absorbers suit factory-height rear ends and vehicles fitted with Dobinsons raised rear springs. Backed by a Dobinsons manufacturer warranty, in stock now with fast dispatch and fitment support from our Australian team.

Kit Includes

  • 2x Dobinsons Monotube IFP Shocks (Rear)

Features

Key Features & Performance Benefits

  • Monotube design with Internal Floating Piston (IFP) separates nitrogen gas from hydraulic oil, stopping the aeration and foaming that causes damping fade on long corrugated stretches.
  • Direct bolt-in replacement for the factory rear shock absorbers on the Isuzu D-Max (2012 to 6/2020), using the factory mounting points, no bracket modification required.
  • Suits vehicles at standard ride height rear end, and matches Dobinsons rear leaf springs where a 2" rear lift is fitted.
  • Larger monotube shock body sheds heat faster than the factory twin-tube unit, holding damping consistency when towing or running loaded on gravel.
  • Chrome piston rod and multi-lip seals resist dust and moisture ingress, relevant on unsealed roads and river crossings.
  • Valving is set up to control constant accessory loads — bullbars, steel rear bars, drawer systems, long-range fuel and water tanks — without transferring harshness to the cabin unladen.
  • Balances daily-driver comfort at kerb weight with firmer control once the tray or canopy is loaded near GVM.
  • Valved and set up in Australia for local touring, towing and work-truck use rather than a single overseas market spec.
  • Many D-Max owners pair these rear shocks with torsion bar adjustment up front for a level stance across the vehicle.

Spring Rate Selection Guide

These rear shocks are matched to your existing or upgraded rear leaf spring rate, so choosing the right spring pack still matters for ride quality. Work out your constant accessory load first — a steel tray, canopy, dual battery tray, long-range fuel tank, water tank or permanent tool storage all sit on the rear leaf springs full-time. Talk to our team about pairing these shocks with a Dobinsons rear leaf spring rated to that load, rather than running a heavy-duty spring with a light accessory load, which reduces ride comfort unladen.

Installation & Setup

Fitting these rear shocks is straightforward for an experienced DIY installer with basic hand tools, or a suspension workshop, and typically takes about an hour per side on a hoist. A rear shock swap alone doesn't change alignment geometry, but if you're fitting new leaf springs at the same time, get the rear ride height and axle alignment checked. Run the shocks through a 500km bed-in period before loading the vehicle to full GVM, allowing the seals and oil to settle. If you're also changing ride height, pair this upgrade with control arm upgrades up front to keep front geometry correct.

Why Choose Dobinsons?

Dobinsons has built 4WD suspension for the Australian market for decades, with local valving rather than a generic global spec. These Monotube IFP rear shocks carry a Dobinsons manufacturer warranty and our fitment support if you have questions before or after you order. Tradespeople and remote tourers around Australia run Dobinsons gear because it's set up for constant load use, not just occasional off-roading — you can view the full Dobinsons range for matching front and rear components.

Who Is This For?

These rear shocks suit D-Max owners running a canopy, steel tray or dual-cab ute for work, tradespeople carrying tools and equipment daily, and tourers towing a camper or caravan on long trips. If you're regularly at or near GVM and want load-levelling as well as damping control, look at airbag suspension to work alongside these shocks and your rear leaf springs.

These Dobinsons Monotube IFP rear shocks are in stock in Australia now, with fast dispatch and fitment advice from our team. If you're planning a full suspension upgrade, browse our full lift kit range to see matched front and rear options for the D-Max.

FAQs

These Monotube IFP rear shocks are designed specifically for the Isuzu D-Max TF series built from 2012 to June 2020, across cab chassis, space cab and dual cab variants. They bolt straight onto the factory rear mounting points, so no drilling or bracket modification is needed. If your build date is near the mid-2020 changeover, check your compliance plate or contact our team to confirm the correct shock. We can verify fitment against your VIN before you order.

On their own, these rear shocks don't add lift — they're a direct-fit replacement for the factory damper at standard ride height. They're also valved to work with a 2" raised rear leaf spring if you're running a Dobinsons lift kit. If you want a specific lift height, pair these shocks with matching leaf springs from our range. Tell us your target height and we'll confirm the right spring and shock combination.

You get 2 x Dobinsons Monotube IFP rear shock absorbers, upper and lower mounting bushes, and mounting hardware, with fitting instructions included. Rear leaf springs, U-bolts and control arms are sold separately if you need them. This listing covers the rear shocks only, matched specifically to the D-Max rear end. Contact us if you want a full front and rear package quoted together.

Yes. The valving in these Monotube IFP shocks is set up to handle constant accessory loads including tow ball weight, long-range tanks and rear bars without excessive fade. The larger monotube body dissipates heat faster than the factory twin-tube shock, which matters on longer tows on corrugated or unsealed roads. For heavier constant loads, pair these shocks with a matched Dobinsons rear leaf spring rated for your setup.

No, rear shocks don't require control arm changes since the D-Max control arms are a front-end component. If you're also lifting the front of the vehicle at the same time, upgraded control arms can help correct front geometry at height. For a rear shock swap alone, your existing control arms are unaffected.

A rear shock swap on its own doesn't change suspension geometry, so a wheel alignment isn't mandatory just for this part. If you're replacing rear leaf springs or changing ride height at the same time, we recommend a rear ride height and alignment check afterward. Always check tyre wear patterns a few hundred kilometres after any suspension work.

Yes. Dobinsons offers rear leaf spring options rated for different constant loads, from light touring setups to heavy-duty tray and canopy loads. These shocks are designed to work across that spring range, so the shock choice stays the same regardless of the leaf spring rate you select. Talk to our team about your accessories and typical load before choosing a spring pack.

These rear shocks alone don't change ride height or tyre clearance since they're a direct factory-height replacement. If you pair them with a 2" rear lift spring as part of a full kit, you may gain some additional clearance, but exact tyre sizing depends on your wheel offset and front-end setup too. Contact our fitment team with your target tyre size so we can confirm what's achievable on your D-Max.

These Dobinsons Monotube IFP rear shocks are covered by a Dobinsons manufacturer warranty against manufacturing defects. Our team can confirm the specific warranty terms and claims process at the time of purchase. We also provide fitment support if you have questions before or after installation. Keep your proof of purchase for any warranty claim.

Yes. These shocks are valved to keep factory-like comfort at kerb weight for daily driving, while still firming up damping control when the vehicle is loaded for work or towing. That balance is the main reason tradespeople and daily D-Max drivers choose this upgrade over a factory replacement shock. You don't need to be running heavy accessories full-time to get a benefit from the improved heat dissipation.
