Description

The Dobinsons MRA Adjustable Rear Shocks are valved specifically for the Next Gen Ford Ranger (2022-on) running a 2" lift, using a 50mm monotube body with external remote reservoir rather than a standard twin-tube design. You get independent adjustment across 20 low-speed compression stages, 10 high-speed compression stages and 15 rebound stages, so the shock can be tuned for unladen touring or a fully loaded tray and canopy. Pair them with correctly rated leaf springs to keep the rear sitting level under your constant load. In stock in Australia now, fully rebuildable, and backed by Dobinsons' manufacturer warranty with fitment support from our team.

Features

Key Features & Performance Benefits

  • Valved specifically for a 2" raised rear ride height on the Next Gen Ford Ranger (2022-on), maintaining correct axle-to-chassis geometry at the taller stance.
  • 50mm large-bore monotube shock body with external remote reservoir — more oil volume and surface area than a standard twin-tube shock absorber, which helps manage heat build-up on long corrugated sections.
  • 3-way external adjustment: 20 stages of low-speed compression, 10 stages of high-speed compression and 15 stages of rebound, each adjusted independently without removing the shock from the vehicle.
  • Reservoir piston carries adjustable compression damping and splits heat load between the main body and reservoir, allowing the shock to run at lower gas pressure without losing bottom-out resistance.
  • 6063 honed aluminium reservoir housing with a floating piston and a Carbon Fibre/PTFE/Disulphide composite wear band to reduce internal friction.
  • 3-stage FKM-HNBR seal package selected for high temperature and UV resistance, relevant for Australian conditions where suspension component temperatures can exceed 50°C on outback tracks.
  • Fully rebuildable shock body — the unit can be serviced and resealed rather than replaced, which lowers long-term running cost on a vehicle doing regular touring or towing kilometres.
  • Low-speed compression tuning lets you set the rear for an unladen tray, a loaded canopy and dual battery setup, or a fully packed touring load without swapping shocks.
  • Works alongside correctly rated rear leaf springs to keep a tray or canopy sitting level under constant accessory load.
  • Manufactured by Dobinsons and dispatched from Australian stock, with fitment support available from our suspension team.

Spring Rate Selection Guide

These shocks pair with a specific rear leaf spring or block combination, and the spring rate should be chosen against your constant accessory load only — not occasional towing weight. Common rear accessories that add to constant load include a steel tray or aluminium canopy, drawer systems, dual battery trays, long-range fuel tanks, and a rear bar with wheel carrier. If you tow occasionally but run a light constant load, an airbag suspension kit is a better fit than over-springing the rear permanently.

Installation & Setup

Fitting the MRA rear shocks involves mounting the remote reservoir bracket and running the hose to the shock body, so we recommend an experienced 4WD suspension fitter rather than a basic DIY swap. A wheel alignment is mandatory after installation because the 2" lift changes rear axle geometry and caster/camber settings. Allow a 500km break-in period before making final damping adjustments, as seals and bushes need to settle. For vehicles carrying a heavier constant load, pairing these shocks with correctly rated leaf springs and inspecting your control arms for wear is worth doing at the same time.

Why Choose Dobinsons?

Dobinsons has built suspension components in Australia for decades, developing the MRA platform from its Monotube Remote Reservoir racing shocks for road-going 4WDs. Every MRA shock is fully rebuildable, so the unit can be serviced rather than scrapped when seals wear out. Backed by a manufacturer warranty and stocked locally, this range is used by tourers and tradespeople who need adjustable damping that copes with changing loads — view the full Dobinsons range for matching front shocks and springs.

Who Is This For?

This kit suits Next Gen Ranger owners running a permanent tray, canopy, or drawer system who need the rear shock damping to match that constant weight. It also suits tourers who tow regularly and want external adjustment to switch between unladen and loaded settings without swapping components. If your load varies trip to trip, consider running these shocks alongside an airbag suspension system for extra support when needed.

These Dobinsons MRA rear shocks are in stock in Australia and ready for fast dispatch, with our team on hand to help you choose the right spring rate for your Next Gen Ranger. Browse our full lift kit range or get in touch if you're building a complete front and rear package.

FAQs

These Dobinsons MRA rear shocks are valved specifically for the Next Gen Ford Ranger built from 2022 onwards, covering both the 2.0L Bi-Turbo four-cylinder and 3.0L V6 diesel variants. They are designed to work with a 2" raised rear ride height, so they are not a direct fit for the earlier PX Ranger platform. If you're unsure which generation you have, our parts finder for the Next Gen Ranger will confirm compatibility. Contact our team with your build date or VIN if you want it double-checked before ordering.

These shocks are valved to suit a 2" raised rear ride height when paired with matching leaf springs or blocks. The shock itself doesn't create lift on its own — the leaf spring or block sets the ride height, and the shock is valved to work correctly through that extended travel. Running them with springs set for a different height can affect damping performance and bump-stop clearance. Talk to our team if you're planning a different lift height so we can confirm the correct shock valving.

You get 2 x Dobinsons MRA Adjustable Rear Shock Absorbers with 50mm monotube bodies, plus the external remote reservoirs, mounting brackets, hose lines and bushes needed to fit them. Fitting instructions and a damping adjustment guide are included. Rear leaf springs, U-bolts and front shocks are not included and are sold separately. See the full kit contents list on this page for exact quantities.

Yes, the 3-way adjustment is specifically useful for towing because you can increase low-speed compression damping to control squat and sway when a loaded trailer or caravan is hitched up, then back it off for unladen driving. The 50mm monotube design with remote reservoir also handles the extra heat generated by sustained load better than a smaller twin-tube shock. Spring rate still needs to be matched to your constant load rather than your towing weight — occasional towing is better supported with an airbag suspension system.

These rear shocks don't require a control arm change on their own, since control arms affect front-end geometry rather than rear shock function. However, if you're also lifting the front of the vehicle to match a 2" rear ride height, upgraded control arms help correct caster and reduce CV joint angles at the taller front height. Ask our team for a front-and-rear package recommendation if you're doing a full lift.

Yes. Any change to rear ride height, including fitting these shocks alongside a 2" raised leaf spring, alters suspension geometry and requires a wheel alignment. This protects tyre wear and keeps the vehicle tracking straight under load. We recommend booking the alignment immediately after installation, before extended driving or towing.

Yes, spring rate should be selected based on your constant rear accessory load — things like a steel tray, canopy, drawers, dual battery setup, and long-range fuel tank. These shocks are valved to suit a 2" raised ride height, so the matching leaf spring or block needs to hold that height under your actual constant load. Our team can help you calculate total constant weight and match it to the correct leaf spring option.

A 2" raised rear end typically provides extra clearance for a modest tyre size increase, but actual clearance depends on your wheel offset, tyre width, and whether the front is lifted to match. We recommend checking your specific wheel and tyre combination against our fitment guidance before ordering larger rubber. Contact our team with your intended tyre size for a fitment check.

These shocks are covered by Dobinsons' manufacturer warranty and are fully rebuildable, meaning the shock body can be serviced and resealed rather than replaced when it eventually needs attention. Warranty terms are handled through 4WD Suspension Australia as your local supplier, with fitment support available if you have questions before or after installation. Contact us for the current warranty period specific to this shock model.

Yes, the low-speed compression adjustment specifically targets everyday ride quality — body roll, brake dive, and how the ute responds to acceleration and load. With 20 stages of low-speed adjustment, the shock can be set softer for unladen daily driving or firmer for constant load work use. Many owners run these as their daily-driven setup and adjust damping when load conditions change for a trip or towing job.
