Features

Key Features & Performance Benefits

  • Foam cell technology — a polyurethane foam ring wraps the piston to stop oil aeration and cavitation, keeping damping consistent on corrugations and rough tracks.
  • Twin-tube shock body construction sized to the weight and travel of the XJ's rear leaf-sprung live axle.
  • Suits standard ride height rear ends and vehicles running up to a 2" rear lift, so it pairs with factory or upgraded leaf springs.
  • Chrome-plated hard shaft with quality oil seals to resist dust ingress and corrosion in Australian conditions.
  • Consistent damping across a wide temperature range for touring, load carrying and daily commuting.
  • Improves rear-end control under constant accessory loads such as rear bar work, dual battery trays and stored camping gear.
  • Reduces rear-end sway and bottoming out when towing a box trailer or camper.
  • Direct bolt-in replacement using factory-style mounting bushes and hardware — no cutting or drilling required.
  • Backed by Toughdog's manufacturer warranty with Australian-based fitment support if you're unsure about your setup, alongside our full range of shock absorbers.

Spring Rate Selection Guide

These shocks are matched to the XJ's standard-to-2" lifted rear leaf springs, so they suit most factory and mild-lift setups without further changes. If you're carrying constant rear weight — a canopy, rear drawers, water tanks or a tow ball load — pair them with a heavier-rated rear leaf spring rather than relying on the shock alone to control sag. Talk to our team about matching spring rate to your accessory load before you order.

Installation & Setup

Fitment is a straightforward bolt-in job for an experienced DIY installer or your usual workshop, using the factory upper and lower mounting points. A wheel alignment isn't strictly required for a shock-only replacement, but it's worth checking if the vehicle is also getting new springs or has uneven tyre wear. Allow a 500km bedding-in period for the foam cell damping to settle into its normal range. If you're planning a broader upgrade, consider pairing these shocks with upgraded control arms at the front for corrected geometry.

Why Choose Toughdog?

Toughdog has built its foam cell shock range specifically for Australian conditions, from corrugated outback roads to daily bitumen commuting. Every shock is backed by a manufacturer warranty and supported locally by our fitment team, not an overseas call centre. Tourers, tradespeople and daily drivers running an XJ can view the full Toughdog range to match front and rear components.

Who Is This For?

These rear shocks suit XJ owners doing regular touring, gravel road driving or towing a trailer who need more consistent rear damping than a tired factory shock can give. They're also a solid fit for tradespeople carrying tools and gear in the rear tray or cargo area. If you're running a constant heavy rear load such as a canopy or camper, also look at airbag suspension to support the extra weight.

These Toughdog rear shocks for the Jeep Cherokee XJ are in stock in Australia for fast dispatch, with our team on hand to confirm fitment for your exact XJ variant. Browse our full lift kit range if you're planning a bigger suspension upgrade alongside these shocks.

FAQs

Yes, these Toughdog rear shock absorbers are built specifically for the Jeep Cherokee XJ sold in Australia from 1994 to 2001, covering the 4.0L petrol I6, 2.5L petrol I4 and 2.5L turbo diesel variants. They bolt directly into the factory upper and lower mounting points with no cutting or drilling. If you're unsure of your exact XJ build, check our parts finder for the Cherokee or contact our team with your VIN or build plate details.

This product is a rear shock absorber pair, not a lift kit, so it doesn't raise ride height on its own. It's designed to suit standard ride height rear ends as well as vehicles already running up to a 2" rear lift from raised leaf springs. If you need actual lift height, pair these shocks with a set of raised leaf springs for the rear.

You get 2 x Toughdog foam cell rear shock absorbers along with the mounting bushes, sleeves and retaining nuts needed for installation. Fitting instructions are included in the box. Front shock absorbers, leaf springs and U-bolts are sold separately, so check our shock absorbers range if you need the front pair too.

Yes, the foam cell design keeps damping consistent under the extra load and movement that towing puts through the rear axle, reducing sway and bottoming compared to a worn factory shock. For regular heavy towing we'd also recommend checking your rear leaf spring rate is matched to your typical tow ball weight. Our team can talk through spring and shock combinations for your specific trailer or camper.

Not for a rear shock-only replacement — the XJ's rear leaf spring setup doesn't use rear control arms in the way coil-sprung vehicles do. If you're also lifting the front with coil springs, upgraded control arms can help correct front-end geometry at height. For this rear shock kit alone, no control arm changes are needed.

A wheel alignment isn't mandatory for a straight shock-for-shock replacement since ride height and geometry aren't changed. It's still good practice to have your alignment checked if the vehicle has existing wear issues or if you're fitting these shocks alongside new springs. We recommend a post-fit check with your usual alignment shop as standard practice.

These are shocks, not springs, so spring rate is selected separately through Toughdog's rear leaf spring range for the XJ. If you're carrying constant rear weight from a canopy, drawers or water tanks, a heavier-rated rear leaf spring is the better way to control sag rather than relying on shock valving alone. Speak with our team about matching leaf spring rate to your typical rear load.

This shock pair doesn't change ride height on its own, so tyre clearance stays as per your current XJ setup. If you're planning larger tyres, you'll generally need raised leaf springs at the rear and, depending on size, some trimming or a front lift to match. Talk to us about a combined shock and spring package if a tyre upgrade is part of your plan.

These Toughdog rear shock absorbers are covered by Toughdog's manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. We handle warranty claims through our Australian-based team, so you're not dealing with an overseas supplier directly. Keep your proof of purchase and fitment date for any warranty claim.

Yes, the foam cell design is set up to give a comfortable, controlled ride for daily commuting as well as handling rougher touring roads. It's a common upgrade for XJ owners replacing tired factory shocks that have gone soft or noisy with age. The damping characteristics are aimed at everyday driving comfort first, with improved control as a bonus when the road gets rough.
