Walk down any 4WD ute line-up in Australia and you will find both spring types doing the same job in very different ways. HiLux, Ranger, Triton, D-Max and most dual-cab utes run leaf springs in the rear. Wagons and some coil-cab utes — LandCruiser wagons, Patrols, Everest, MU-X, the Navara NP300 coil-rear — run coils at both ends. Neither design is simply better. They are different tools, and knowing which one your vehicle has (and why) is the first step to upgrading it properly.
A leaf spring is a stack of curved steel leaves clamped together, mounted between the chassis and the axle. It locates the axle and carries the load at the same time, which is why it has dominated load-carrying vehicles for a century: the design is simple, tough and spreads weight along the chassis rails.
A coil spring is a wound steel bar that only does one job — support the load. The axle has to be located separately by control arms and a Panhard rod or similar linkage. That separation of duties is what gives coil-sprung 4WDs their smoother ride and better wheel travel.
Leaf springs win on outright load. The multi-leaf design gets progressively stiffer as it compresses, so a well-specced pack can take a big payload without drama. That is why every serious work ute runs them. Coil springs carry less outright, but load-rated coils matched to your accessory weight still carry touring loads well, and for loads that come and go, airbag helper kits support the springs without a permanently harsh unladen ride. Coils win here. With less internal friction than a leaf stack and the axle located by proper linkages, a coil-sprung 4WD rides more smoothly unladen and keeps its tyres on the ground longer through twisted terrain. This is why touring wagons and the most capable off-roaders run coils, and why coil conversion is a popular (though engineering-intensive) modification on some platforms.
Leaf springs have improved — modern parabolic designs use fewer, thinner leaves for a suppler ride — but a loaded work ute will never ride like a coil wagon, and an unladen ute on heavy-duty leaves will always feel firm. Choosing the right spring rate for how the vehicle actually spends its time is the difference between a great setup and a jarring one.
Leaf packs are famously tolerant of abuse and, in remote areas, simpler to inspect and repair. Their wear items are bushes, centre bolts and the leaves themselves, which can fatigue and flatten over years of load — sagging rear leaf springs are one of the most common problems we see on HiLux, Triton and Colorado utes. Coils rarely break, but the bushes in the arms and rods that locate a coil-sprung axle wear and turn into vague steering and clunks over time.

You generally do not choose between coils and leaves — your vehicle made that choice at the factory, for good reasons.
