How Is a Lift Kit Installed? Time, Cost, DIY or Workshop

You have picked a lift kit for your 4WD; now for the practical questions. What does the installation actually involve? How many hours will a workshop charge? And is it a job an experienced home mechanic can tackle, or one that belongs on a hoist? This guide walks through the process at a high level so you know what you are paying for, what typical Australian installation costs look like, and how to decide between DIY and a professional fit.

The short answer: A standard 2 inch lift kit takes a workshop roughly 3 to 6 hours to fit, with labour typically costing about $400 to $900 in Australia depending on the vehicle and any seized or rusted components. A wheel alignment afterwards is always required. Experienced home mechanics can fit basic kits, but most owners are better served by a workshop.

What does installing a lift kit actually involve?

In broad terms, the job is a full swap of your vehicle's springs and shock absorbers, corner by corner. The vehicle goes up on a hoist or stands, the wheels come off, and the old shocks and springs come out. Coil springs are under significant stored tension and need proper spring compressors and technique to handle safely, which is one of the main reasons this is not a casual driveway job. On leaf-sprung rears, the axle has to be supported and unbolted from the old packs before the new leaf springs go in.

The new springs and shocks are then installed along with any hardware in the kit, such as bushes, U-bolts or extended components. A detail that separates good installs from average ones: suspension bushes should be finally tightened with the vehicle at ride height, not hanging at full droop, so the bushes are not preloaded and worn out prematurely. The installer then checks clearances around brake lines, ABS sensor wiring and tyres, settles the vehicle, measures the ride height, and sends it off for a wheel alignment. This is a description of the process so you understand the job, not a set of instructions; always follow the kit manufacturer's fitting documentation or use a professional installer.

How long does a lift kit installation take?

For a straightforward 2 inch spring-and-shock kit on a common vehicle like a HiLux, Ranger or LandCruiser, most workshops allow between 3 and 6 hours. Real-world variables push that around: seized bolts and rusted U-bolts on older vehicles add time, as do extras like upper control arms, diff drops or a steering damper. A bigger 3 inch kit with geometry correction parts can stretch to a full day. Booking the alignment for the same day means you usually drop the vehicle off in the morning and collect it lifted and aligned in the afternoon.

How much does installation cost in Australia?

Labour for a standard 2 inch kit typically lands between $400 and $900 at Australian workshops, driven by hourly rates (commonly $120 to $180 per hour), the vehicle, and the kit's complexity. City 4WD specialists often charge more than regional general workshops but bring vehicle-specific experience. The table below shows indicative figures; get a firm quote for your vehicle and kit.

ItemIndicative cost (AUD)Notes
Labour, standard 2 inch kit$400 - $9003 to 6 hours at typical workshop rates
Labour, 3 inch kit with correction parts$900 - $1,500+UCAs, diff drop and extras add hours
Wheel alignment$100 - $180Always required after a lift
Extras (bushes, seized hardware)VariableMore likely on older, high-kilometre vehicles

Remember these figures are labour only; the kit itself is a separate cost. For a complete picture of parts plus fitting, see our full breakdown of suspension lift kit cost in Australia. Buying your kit online from 4WD Suspension and having a local workshop fit it is a popular way to get quality parts at a sharp price with professional installation.

Should you DIY or use a workshop?

An experienced home mechanic with a proper workshop setup, quality spring compressors, rated stands, a torque wrench and a full weekend can fit a basic 2 inch kit on many vehicles. If you have done suspension work before and own the right gear, it is an achievable job, and the kit manufacturer's fitting instructions will cover the vehicle-specific details.

For everyone else, a workshop is the smart call, and not just for convenience. Coil springs store dangerous energy. Fasteners on suspension components are safety-critical and torque-sensitive. Bushes tightened at the wrong height wear out fast. And a workshop will spot the things a first-timer misses: a brake hose near its limit, a worn ball joint that should be replaced while everything is apart, a bump stop that needs trimming. Given that you need to visit an alignment shop afterwards anyway, having one business do the whole job often costs less in total time and rework than a first DIY attempt.

Why is a wheel alignment always needed after a lift?

Changing ride height changes your steering and suspension geometry: caster, camber and toe all move as the suspension arms sit at new angles. Skip the alignment and you will get vague steering, an off-centre wheel and rapid, uneven tyre wear that can destroy a set of all-terrains in months. Every lift, whether DIY or professional, must be followed by a full wheel alignment, and it is worth using an aligner familiar with lifted 4WDs who can work with the geometry a lift produces. On IFS vehicles pushed beyond about 2 inches, if the aligner cannot get caster back into specification, that is the signal that correction parts like upper control arms are needed. Our 4WD suspension buyers guide covers how to spec the right kit before you get to that point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive straight after a lift kit is installed?

The vehicle is drivable once fitted and checked, but it should go straight to a wheel alignment before normal driving. Many installers also recommend a re-check of fastener torque after the first few hundred kilometres once the suspension has settled.

Do I need special tools to fit a lift kit at home?

At minimum: rated jack stands or a hoist, quality coil spring compressors, a torque wrench and a full socket set. If you do not own proper spring compressors, do not improvise; compressed coil springs are genuinely dangerous. That tooling cost alone often tips the maths towards a workshop fit.

How much does a workshop charge to fit a 2 inch lift kit?

Typically $400 to $900 in labour for a standard spring-and-shock kit, plus $100 to $180 for the wheel alignment. Vehicles needing extra parts, or older vehicles with seized hardware, cost more. Always get a quote for your specific vehicle and kit.

Does fitting a lift kit affect my new-car servicing?

You can continue normal servicing after a suspension upgrade; just tell your servicing workshop the vehicle is lifted so alignments and inspections are done with the modification in mind, and keep records of the kit and installation.
