The Nissan Patrol GQ (Y60, 1988-1997) and GU (Y61, 1997-ON) are among the most modified 4WDs in Australia, and their solid-axle, coil-sprung suspension is hugely capable - and famously prone to one terrifying problem: death wobble. Add sagging rear coils under touring weight and steering that wanders after a lift, and the pattern is clear. All of it is fixable, and most of it comes down to geometry and worn components rather than the design itself.
Death wobble - a violent front-end shimmy triggered by a bump at speed - almost always traces to a combination of: worn panhard rod bushes (the most common single culprit), caster out of specification after a lift, worn swivel hub (king pin) bearings or incorrect preload, unbalanced or worn tyres, and a tired steering damper. Fix it in that order. Replace the panhard bushes first, set caster right, check swivel preload, balance the tyres - and only then treat a damper like the Toughdog adjustable damper as the finishing touch. A damper fitted over worn parts hides the symptom until it comes back worse.
Both Patrols locate the front axle with radius arms and a panhard rod. Lift the vehicle and caster rotates negative (less self-centring) while the panhard pulls the axle off-centre. At 2" - like the Toughdog GQ kit or GU wagon kit - most Patrols drive fine as supplied. From 3" up, caster correction (offset radius arm bushes or aftermarket arms) and an adjustable panhard rod (GQ / GU) are the difference between a truck that tracks straight and one that follows every camber change.
Thirty-year-old coils with a drawer system, long-range tank and camping load on top will sit low and wallow. Replacement coils rated for constant load restore height and control; a 4" setup like the Dobinsons Nitro Gas 4" kit suits big-tyre touring builds - with the geometry corrections above treated as mandatory at that height, plus extended brake lines and driveline checks.
Suspension lifts beyond your state's allowable limit (commonly 50mm without certification, less once combined with larger tyres) may require engineering approval under the applicable light vehicle modification rules (VSB14/NCOP). Check your state's requirements before buying - an uncertified over-height lift can affect insurance and roadworthiness. We flag this on every 3" and 4" capable kit we sell.
No - it masks it. Wobble is caused by worn bushes, caster, swivel bearings or tyres. Fix those first; the damper is the last 10 percent.
Around 2" usually drives fine. At 3"+ budget for caster correction and an adjustable panhard; at 4"+ they are essential along with brake lines and driveline checks.
The platforms are related but springs, shocks and steering parts are generation-specific. Leaf-rear GQ/GU utes also differ from coil wagons - always match your exact model.
