Description

Toughdog rear shock absorbers use foam cell damping to stop oil aeration on corrugations and long descents, suited to the Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ (1993-1998) and ZG (1999-2004). Each twin-tube unit is tuned for factory ride height and for vehicles running up to 2" raised rear coil springs, holding load control steady under standard or lightly-loaded touring conditions. Backed by Toughdog's manufacturer warranty and dispatched from Australian stock, with fitment guidance from our team on every order. Check exact compatibility using our Jeep Grand Cherokee parts finder before you order.

Kit Includes

  • 2 x Toughdog Rear Shock Absorbers (Foam Cell Technology)
  • Heavy-duty mounting hardware and bushings included
  • Protective dust boots pre-installed
  • Installation instructions specific to Jeep Grand Cherokee ZG/ZJ
  • Note: Front shocks, springs and control arms sold separately
  • Compatible with stock and lifted ride heights up to 2 inches

Features

Key Features & Performance Benefits

  • Foam cell technology fills the shock body with a nitrogen-charged foam block instead of a free-floating gas charge, stopping oil aeration and fade when the rear axle is working hard on corrugations or long descents.
  • Twin-tube construction gives the rear shock a larger fluid volume than a basic single-tube unit, helping dissipate heat generated on long touring drives or when towing.
  • Valving is set up for the factory rear ride height and also suits vehicles running up to 2" raised rear coil springs, so you don't need a separate shock if you've already fitted lifted springs.
  • Reduces rear sag and axle wander under constant load, useful when the ZG/ZJ is carrying camping gear, a bullbar-equipped front end, or towing a trailer.
  • Chrome-plated piston rods and updated seals are used to resist pitting and fluid weeping, which is the most common failure point on older, tired factory dampers.
  • Direct bolt-in replacement using the factory upper and lower mounting points — no drilling, no cutting, no modification to the chassis or axle housing.
  • Balances daily-driver comfort with firmer control when loaded, rather than a harsh off-road-only tune that beats you up on the highway.
  • Pair with matching Toughdog front shock absorbers so all four corners are damped to the same specification.

Spring Rate Selection Guide

Rear spring rate should match your constant accessory load — a shock absorber controls the movement a spring allows, so a mismatched spring will still sag or top out regardless of the shock fitted. Common rear-end additions on the Grand Cherokee include a rear-mounted spare, drawer systems, dual batteries, water tanks and a tow bar, all of which add constant weight behind the axle. If you're carrying this gear daily, pair these shocks with a heavier-rated rear coil spring rather than relying on the shock alone to hold ride height.

Installation & Setup

Fitment is a straightforward bolt-in job for an experienced DIY installer with basic hand tools, though we recommend a qualified workshop if you're not confident working under the vehicle. A wheel alignment is mandatory after fitting new rear shocks, particularly if you've changed ride height, to bring camber, caster and toe back within factory tolerance. Allow a 500km settling-in period before final alignment if you've also fitted new rear coil springs. If you're addressing worn bushes or geometry issues at the same time, consider pairing this job with upgraded control arms.

Why Choose Toughdog?

Toughdog has built its shock absorber range specifically around Australian conditions — corrugated outback tracks, extended highway towing and daily commuter use. Every Toughdog shock is backed by a manufacturer warranty and the foam cell design used in this rear shock is the same core technology used across their touring and load-carrying ranges. Tradespeople and grey nomads towing camper trailers both rely on this range for consistent damping under repeated load cycles — view the full Toughdog range.

Who Is This For?

This rear shock suits ZG/ZJ Grand Cherokee owners replacing tired, leaking factory dampers, as well as anyone who has already fitted 2" raised rear coil springs and needs a shock valved to match. Tradespeople carrying tools and equipment, and tourers towing camper trailers or boats, will notice the biggest difference in reduced rear-end float. If you're regularly carrying variable loads and want load-levelling on demand, also look at airbag suspension to complement this shock.

In stock and dispatched from our Australian warehouse, with our team on hand to confirm fitment before you buy. Browse our full lift kit range if you're planning a complete suspension upgrade alongside these rear shocks.

FAQs

Yes — this Toughdog rear shock is built for both the ZJ (1993-1998) and ZG (1999-2004) Grand Cherokee across the 4.0L I6, V8 and 2.7L CRD diesel variants. It bolts directly into the factory upper and lower mounting points with no modification needed. If you're unsure which series your Grand Cherokee is, our team can confirm fitment from your VIN or build plate before you order.

This shock absorber does not add lift on its own — lift height comes from the coil spring, not the shock. It is valved to suit the factory rear ride height and is also compatible with vehicles running up to 2" raised rear coil springs. If you need actual lift, pair this shock with a set of raised rear coil springs from our range.

You get 2 x Toughdog rear shock absorbers with foam cell twin-tube construction, plus mounting bushes, washers and fitting hardware for both units. Rear coil springs, leaf springs and control arms are sold separately, as are the front shock absorbers. Everything needed to fit the rear shocks themselves is included in the box.

Yes, the twin-tube foam cell design is intended to control rear-axle movement more consistently than a worn factory shock, which helps when towing a trailer or camper. For genuine towing capability though, the rear coil spring rate matters as much as the shock — match a heavier-rated rear spring if you're towing regularly. Our team can help match a spring rate to your tow ball weight.

Not necessarily for a standard-height replacement. If you're combining this shock with raised rear coil springs though, worn or geometry-limited factory control arms can bind at full droop, so it's worth inspecting them at the same time. We stock upgraded control arms if yours are worn or you want corrected geometry at a lifted height.

Yes, a wheel alignment is required any time rear suspension components are replaced, and it's mandatory if you've also changed ride height with new springs. We recommend allowing roughly 500km for new components to settle before the final alignment. Skipping this step can cause uneven tyre wear.

Yes — this shock is a damper only, so it works with a range of Toughdog rear coil spring rates depending on your constant accessory load. Heavier-rated springs suit vehicles carrying a rear drawer system, dual battery setup or towing a trailer regularly. Talk to our team about matching a spring rate to your typical rear-end load before ordering.

This rear shock alone doesn't change ride height or wheel arch clearance, so it won't affect tyre fitment on its own. Tyre size upgrades are generally tied to the lift achieved by your coil springs, not the shock. If you're planning larger tyres, check clearance against your specific spring and lift combination first.

These shocks are covered by Toughdog's manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Full warranty terms are confirmed at the time of purchase and our team can talk you through the claims process if you ever need it. Genuine Toughdog stock is sourced through authorised Australian channels, which keeps the warranty valid.

Yes, the foam cell twin-tube tune is set up to balance everyday comfort with the extra control needed under load, rather than a firm off-road-only setup. Grand Cherokee owners using their vehicle for commuting, family use and occasional touring or towing will find the ride comfortable at factory ride height. It's a straightforward like-for-like upgrade over a worn factory shock.
