Description

The Dobinsons MRA Monotube Rear Shocks are purpose-matched to the Isuzu D-Max 2012-2020 (RG series) and use a monotube design with a larger internal piston bore than the factory twin-tube unit, giving quicker heat transfer to the shock body under sustained load. That means less fade on long descents, corrugated tracks or when you're towing near GVM. Sold as a pair with all mounting hardware, they're built for constant duty rather than occasional weekend use. In stock in Australia, backed by Dobinsons' manufacturer warranty, with our team on hand to confirm the right length for your coil spring or leaf spring height.

  • 2x Dobinsons Monotube MRA Shocks (Rear)

Features

Key Features & Performance Benefits

  • Monotube design separates oil and gas into a single tube, giving faster heat dissipation than the factory twin-tube rear shock on the D-Max
  • Larger piston bore than standard OE shocks improves oil flow control and reduces fade on long, sustained inputs such as corrugations or towing on grade
  • Available matched to standard ride height or a nominated lifted height — confirm your exact rear spring height with our team before ordering so shock length is correct
  • Nitrogen gas charge helps prevent aeration (foaming) of the damping oil during repeated compression cycles
  • Sold as a genuine pair, designed to be fitted together rather than as a single replacement unit
  • Improves rear-end control under constant accessory load — canopy, tray, water tanks, caravan or camper trailer ball weight
  • Chrome-plated piston rod and quality seals resist pitting and oil weeping, relevant to D-Max owners running dusty or wet touring routes
  • Works alongside our shock absorber range if you're also upgrading the front end at the same time
  • Retains a factory-style ride quality unladen while adding resistance to bottoming out when loaded

Spring Rate Selection Guide

Rear shock damping is designed to work with a matched spring rate, so tell us what you're regularly carrying before we confirm your shock length and valving suitability. Common accessories that change the ideal spring rate include steel trays, canopies, dual battery setups, water tanks, bullbars and towbar-mounted ball weight. If you're running a heavier constant load, pair these shocks with a higher-rated leaf spring or coil spring rather than relying on the shock alone to control sag.

Installation & Setup

Fitting the MRA rear shocks is a bolt-on job for an experienced DIY installer with basic hand tools, though we recommend a qualified suspension fitter given the torque specs on mounting bolts. Wheel alignment isn't directly affected by a rear shock swap alone, but if you're fitting new springs at the same time, a post-install alignment check is mandatory. Allow a 500km bedding-in period for the seals and oil to settle before final judgement on ride feel. If you're upgrading rear-end control, it's also worth reviewing your control arm condition, especially on higher-kilometre D-Max utes.

Why Choose Dobinsons?

Dobinsons has built its rear shock range specifically around Australian ute and 4WD use — heavy accessory loads, long touring distances and variable road surfaces. Every MRA shock is backed by a manufacturer warranty and dispatched from Australian stock, so you're not waiting weeks on an overseas order. You can view the full Dobinsons range to see matching front shocks, coils and leaf springs for the same vehicle.

Who Is This For?

This kit suits D-Max owners who carry a tray or canopy for work, tow a caravan or trailer regularly, or tour with camping gear loaded in the tub. If your rear end sags under a constant load rather than just occasionally, it's also worth looking at airbag suspension as a load-levelling add-on alongside these shocks.

In stock in Australia with fast dispatch and fitment support from our team — browse our full lift kit range if you're planning a bigger suspension upgrade alongside these rear shocks.

FAQs

Yes, these Dobinsons MRA monotube rear shocks are built specifically for the Isuzu D-Max RG series from 2012 to 2020, covering both the 3.0L 4JJ1-TC and later 1.9L 4JK1-TC diesel variants. They are a direct bolt-in replacement for the factory rear shock mounts. If you're running any prior aftermarket suspension modifications, check your current ride height with our team first so we can confirm the correct shock length. You can also run your rego or VIN through our parts finder for the D-Max to double check fitment.

This is a rear shock absorber only — it does not raise ride height on its own, since lift height is set by the spring, not the shock. These MRA shocks are available matched to standard ride height or to a nominated lifted height, so if you've already got raised rear springs or leaf springs fitted, tell us the height when ordering so we send the correct length. Pairing the shock length incorrectly with your spring height can affect droop travel and shock life. Our team will confirm this before dispatch if you're unsure.

You receive 2 x Dobinsons MRA monotube rear shock absorbers, complete with mounting bushes, sleeves and washers for the factory rear shock mounts. Rear springs, whether coil or leaf, are sold separately depending on your D-Max configuration. Front shocks are also sold separately, as this listing covers the rear axle only. Full fitting instructions are included with the shocks.

Yes, the monotube design is well suited to towing because it manages heat build-up better than a standard twin-tube shock during sustained damping cycles, such as on a long tow with a loaded trailer or caravan. For heavier constant tow ball weights, we'd recommend pairing these shocks with an upgraded rear leaf spring rate to control sag properly. The shock alone controls damping, not static load carrying capacity.

Not for a rear shock replacement on its own — the D-Max rear axle uses leaf springs, so control arms aren't part of the rear suspension geometry. If you're also lifting the front end or running a coil-sprung front conversion, it's worth reviewing your control arm condition and geometry at the same time. Our team can advise if your specific setup needs anything additional.

A rear shock swap alone doesn't typically require a fresh wheel alignment, since it doesn't change ride height or suspension geometry angles. However, if you're fitting new rear springs or leaf springs at the same time as these shocks, an alignment check afterwards is mandatory. We'd always recommend a post-fit check regardless, just to confirm everything has settled correctly.

The shock itself is a fixed valving product, but your rear spring rate is a separate choice that should match what you're regularly carrying. Heavier constant loads like canopies, water tanks or towbar ball weight call for a firmer rear leaf spring or coil spring rating. Talk to our team about your typical load before ordering so we can recommend a spring to pair with these shocks. Getting the spring rate right has more effect on ride height and sag than the shock alone.

Since this product is a rear shock replacement and doesn't raise ride height by itself, tyre clearance won't change unless you're also fitting taller rear springs. If you're planning a tyre size upgrade, let us know the size you're after and we can advise whether a raised spring is needed alongside these shocks to maintain clearance.

These shocks are covered by Dobinsons' manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Warranty specifics can vary by component, so we'll confirm the exact term for the MRA43-A801 shocks at the time of purchase. As an Australian-based supplier, we handle warranty claims locally rather than requiring you to deal directly with an overseas manufacturer. Keep your proof of purchase and fitment date on file in case you need to make a claim.

Yes, these MRA monotube rear shocks are designed to retain a comfortable unladen ride while adding control when the vehicle is loaded, which suits daily-driven D-Max utes used for both work and personal use. The monotube design doesn't make the ride harsher day to day — it improves how the shock behaves once heat and load are introduced. Many D-Max owners run this shock as their everyday rear suspension setup, not just for touring or towing trips.
