Spring Rate Selection Guide

Selecting the correct spring rate is critical for optimal ride quality and safety. Choose spring rates based on your constant accessory load—the combined weight of accessories permanently fitted to your Pathfinder R51. Common front-end accessories include bull bars (30-60kg), winches (30-40kg), heavy-duty batteries, upgraded intercoolers, long-range fuel tanks, and aftermarket lighting. Occasional loads like camping gear, recovery equipment, or towing are not considered constant loads and should not influence spring rate selection—choosing overly heavy springs results in harsh ride quality and potential damage to other suspension components.

Installation & Setup

Professional installation by a qualified mechanic or experienced 4WD workshop is strongly recommended for this front lift kit. Wheel alignment is mandatory after installation to prevent premature tyre wear and ensure safe handling characteristics. Allow a 500km break-in period for springs to settle and shock valving to bed in before making final ride height or performance assessments. For optimal suspension geometry and steering performance on lifted Pathfinders, consider pairing this kit with upgraded control arms to correct camber angles and restore factory handling dynamics.

Why Choose Dobinsons?

With over 60 years of Australian suspension manufacturing heritage, Dobinsons has earned its reputation as one of the country's most trusted 4WD suspension brands. Every shock absorber and spring is designed in-house by qualified suspension engineers, dyno-tested to precise specifications, and durability-tested through millions of cycles to simulate extreme Australian outback conditions. Backed by comprehensive manufacturer warranty and trusted by touring enthusiasts, tradespeople, and professional off-road teams across Australia and 40+ countries worldwide, view the full Dobinsons range for complete suspension solutions.

Who Is This Front Lift Kit For?

Weekend adventurers and grey nomads touring Australia benefit from the balanced ride quality that remains comfortable on highway drives while providing control on corrugated dirt roads. For owners carrying significant rear loads, complement this front kit with airbag suspension for adjustable rear load support.

FAQs

This Dobinsons Nitro Gas Front Lift Kit is specifically designed for the Nissan Pathfinder R51 series manufactured between 2005 and 2013, covering both 2.5L diesel and 4.0L petrol V6 engine variants. The kit features direct bolt-in OE replacement design, using factory mounting points without requiring any cutting or modification. If you're unsure about your specific model year or variant, our suspension experts can verify fitment using your VIN number—simply contact us with your vehicle details for confirmation before ordering.

This is a front-only lift kit designed primarily to restore factory ride height after the addition of heavy front-end accessories like bull bars, winches, and upgraded batteries, or to level the vehicle when combined with rear lift components. The actual lift height achieved depends on your current accessory load and selected spring rate—typically ranging from 25mm to 50mm over standard height. For precise lift measurements for your specific setup, contact our team with details of your current front-end accessories and we can recommend the optimal spring rate to achieve your desired ride height.

This kit includes 2 pre-assembled Dobinsons Nitro Gas front struts with matched coil springs already installed, natural rubber top mount bushings, steel dust covers, and all necessary OE-style mounting hardware for direct replacement. The pre-assembled design means the springs are correctly compressed and seated on the struts, significantly reducing installation time and eliminating the need for spring compressor tools. Please note this is a front-only kit—rear suspension components, control arms, brake line extensions, and wheel alignment are not included and must be purchased separately if required for your build.

Yes, this Dobinsons Nitro Gas Front Lift Kit features firmer valving and increased oil capacity specifically designed to handle the additional weight transfer and stress associated with towing caravans and trailers. The twin-tube design with larger bore and body diameter provides superior fade resistance during extended highway towing, while the vehicle-specific valve tuning maintains stability under braking and cornering loads. For optimal towing performance, ensure you select the appropriate spring rate based on your constant front-end accessory load, and consider adding rear airbag suspension to manage tongue weight and maintain level stance when hitched.

While not mandatory for this moderate front lift, upgrading to adjustable or extended control arms is highly recommended for Pathfinder R51 builds to maintain proper suspension geometry and steering angles. Lifting the front end alters camber and caster angles, which can lead to uneven tyre wear, reduced steering response, and compromised handling if not corrected. Aftermarket control arms allow precise alignment adjustment to restore factory geometry, improve wheel articulation for off-road use, and often feature stronger construction with upgraded bushings for better durability. Our suspension specialists can recommend compatible control arm options when you contact us with your build specifications.

Yes, professional wheel alignment is absolutely mandatory after installing this front lift kit on your Pathfinder R51. Replacing struts and springs alters your vehicle's ride height and suspension geometry, affecting camber, caster, and toe angles—all critical for safe handling, steering precision, and tyre longevity. Driving without proper alignment can cause rapid and uneven tyre wear, pulling to one side, and reduced braking performance. Book your alignment with a 4WD-experienced workshop that can accommodate lifted vehicles and understands the specific alignment requirements for modified Pathfinders.

Spring rate selection should be based exclusively on your constant accessory load—the combined weight of permanently fitted items like bull bars, winches, heavy-duty batteries, and upgraded intercoolers on the front of your Pathfinder. When ordering, select the spring rate that matches your actual constant load, not occasional loads like camping gear or recovery equipment. Choosing unnecessarily heavy spring rates results in harsh ride quality, increased stress on other suspension components, and poor handling on unloaded drives. If you're unsure which spring rate is appropriate for your setup, contact our team with a list of your fitted accessories and we'll calculate the correct specification.

This front lift kit can accommodate moderately larger tyres on your Pathfinder R51, though the exact size depends on your wheel offset, total lift height (front and rear combined), and whether you've fitted aftermarket control arms for increased articulation clearance. Most R51 builds with 50mm front and rear lift can comfortably run 265/70R17 or 265/65R18 tyres without rubbing during normal driving, though full lock turning and extreme suspension compression may require minor guard trimming. For aggressive tyre sizing (285mm+ width), additional modifications like guard flaring, control arm upgrades, and diff drop brackets may be necessary to prevent contact with suspension and body components.

This Dobinsons Nitro Gas Front Lift Kit is backed by Dobinsons' comprehensive manufacturer warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal operating conditions. Dobinsons stands behind their Australian-engineered suspension with warranty support honored through authorized dealers like 4WD Suspension Australia. Warranty coverage requires professional installation, appropriate vehicle application, and normal use conditions—damage from accidents, competition use, improper installation, or incorrect spring rate selection is not covered. For specific warranty terms, duration, and claim procedures, contact us or refer to the warranty documentation included with your kit.

Absolutely—this Dobinsons Nitro Gas Front Lift Kit is engineered to provide balanced performance for both daily highway driving and weekend off-road adventures. The twin-tube design with vehicle-specific valving delivers comfortable on-road ride quality similar to premium factory suspension, while the increased oil capacity and larger bore diameter prevent fade during extended highway cruising or towing. Natural rubber bushings minimize noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) for quiet cabin comfort on daily commutes. Unlike budget lift kits that compromise on-road manners for off-road capability, Dobinsons suspension is tested extensively for real-world touring conditions where your Pathfinder spends most of its time on sealed roads between outback destinations.

Solid Upgrade for Remote Touring

By: Nick B on 17 June 2026
After fitting this Dobinsons front lift kit to my R51, the difference on corrugated outback tracks is night and day. The pre-assembled struts made installation straightforward, and the ride quality is genuinely impressive even when loaded up with recovery gear and long-range tanks. Put them through their paces on the Gibb River Road last month and they handled everything without fuss.

Perfect Upgrade for Our Family Pathfinder

By: Steve V on 16 June 2026
Fitted this Dobinsons front lift kit to our R51 Pathfinder before our trip down the Great Ocean Road and up through the High Country, and the difference is night and day. The ride quality is noticeably smoother even with the kids' gear loaded up, and we've got heaps more clearance for the rougher tracks we tackle heading into our favourite camping spots. Really impressed with how well-engineered these struts are – you can tell they've been properly tested for Aussie conditions.

Perfect Upgrade for Our Family Pathfinder

By: Kate B on 11 June 2026
Fitted this Dobinsons lift kit to our R51 about two months ago and it's been brilliant for our regular trips down to the South Coast. The ride quality is noticeably better than stock, especially when we've got the roof topper loaded up with camping gear and the kids in the back. Installation was straightforward and the pre-assembled struts saved heaps of time. Couldn't be happier with how the old girl handles corrugated roads now.

Best thing I've done to the Pathy

By: Rachel M on 10 June 2026
Had these Dobinsons struts fitted about three months ago and the difference is night and day. Loaded up with tools and gear during the week it sits level instead of sagging at the front, and took it out to the High Country last weekend where it handled the rough tracks better than it ever has. Well worth the money for a quality Aussie-made kit that actually does what it's supposed to.

Proper Kit for Serious Remote Work

By: Bradley O on 9 June 2026
Been running this Dobinsons front lift kit on my R51 through the Simpson Desert and up through Cape York, and it's handled everything I've thrown at it. The pre-assembled struts made fitment straightforward, and the ride quality is noticeably better than stock even when loaded up with recovery gear and long-range tanks. Well worth the investment if you're doing proper remote touring rather than just weekend beach runs.
