Description

Reviewed by Andrew, 4WD Suspension fitment team

Complete Tough Dog suspension kit for the Nissan Patrol GU Y61 Ute (Leaf Rear) 1999-2016, front and rear in one package, lifting the vehicle approximately 2" (50mm). Build the kit from the dropdowns below and every component is matched to that height and load.

Tough Dog build suspension for 4WDs only, so the valving and spring rates are set for corrugations, load and heat rather than showroom ride. Once a bull bar, winch, drawers, a long-range tank or a canopy goes on a Patrol the factory suspension sags and runs out of control quickly. This kit puts the ride height and damping back where they should be, and every part in it is the same Tough Dog component we sell individually for the Patrol.

Choosing Your Options

Shock configuration. Foam Cell is the standard build - a 41mm bore with Tough Dog's nitrogen-charged foam cell insert that resists fade on long corrugated runs. The 40mm bore Adjustable adds 9-position damping you can set at the base of each shock. The 45mm big-bore Adjustable is the pick for serious outback touring with more oil volume and the same 9-stage adjustment. The 53mm bore Ralph is the heaviest-duty option for remote-area corrugations.

Front spring rate. Comfort/Medium suits a standard front end, an alloy bar or a steel bar without a winch. Constant Load suits a steel bull bar with a winch fitted permanently.

Rear spring rate. Choose by the weight the tray carries all the time. 0-300kg suits mixed daily use. Constant 300kg suits a canopy, toolboxes or a service body that never comes off. Constant 500kg is for a heavy permanent fit-out or a slide-on camper.

Greasable shackles and pins. Replace the factory rear shackles and spring pins with greasable Tough Dog items so the bushes can be serviced and stay quiet.

Castor correction. Lifting a radius-arm front end rotates the diff and reduces castor, which makes the steering vague and slow to self-centre. The correction bushes or plates in this kit put castor back where it belongs at the new ride height.

Steering damper. Optional Heavy Duty EXT replacement, Return-to-Centre (RTC) for improved straight-line stability, or the SV 9-stage adjustable damper. The series dropdown makes sure the right damper is supplied.

Installation & Setup

Bolt-in installation with no cutting or welding. A wheel alignment is required after fitting, and the castor correction supplied in the kit must be set during that alignment. Tough Dog require their fitting sheet to be completed at installation to keep the warranty intact. Please note that all shocks, coil springs and leaf springs are supplied to the advertised lift height and constant-load rating. Actual vehicle height may vary with the vehicle, its condition and the weight of fitted accessories, so further adjustment may be required after installation.

FAQs

Yes - it suits the Nissan Patrol GU Y61 cab chassis with a coil-sprung front and leaf-sprung rear, built from 1999 to 2016 with the TD42, ZD30 and TB45 engines, in single and dual cab. It does not suit the coil-rear GU wagon or the GQ/GU coil cab, which have their own kits.

Approximately 2 inches (50mm) front and rear. Please note that all shocks, coil springs and leaf springs are supplied to the advertised lift height and constant-load rating. Actual vehicle height may vary with the vehicle, its condition and the weight of fitted accessories, so further adjustment may be required after installation.

Count only the weight that never leaves the tray. 0-300kg suits a ute with variable loads. Constant 300kg is for a canopy or toolboxes, and constant 500kg is for a heavy permanent service body or slide-on. A heavier rating than you need rides firm when empty.

Foam Cell suits most owners and resists fade. The 40mm Adjustable lets you tune the damping for towing or loaded work, the 45mm big-bore Adjustable is for serious outback touring, and the 53mm Ralph is for remote-area corrugations week in, week out.

If the ute works hard or sees a lot of dust and water, yes. Greasable shackles and pins let the bushes be serviced at every oil change instead of drying out and squeaking, and the factory items are usually worn by the time a lift goes on.

Yes. The front lift changes castor, camber and toe, so book an alignment straight after fitment, have the castor bushes set at the same time and re-torque the rear U-bolts after the first few hundred kilometres.
