Airbag suspension is one of the most misunderstood upgrades in the 4WD world. Some owners fit it expecting a legal payload increase. Others expect it to fix a vehicle that rides badly empty. Neither is what airbags do. What they do exceptionally well is hold a loaded ute or wagon level, and that one job solves a surprising number of problems. Here is what airbag suspension actually is, what it fixes, what it does not, and how to choose a kit that suits how you use the vehicle.
In the Australian 4WD market, "airbag suspension" almost always means one of two things.
Helper airbags are the common version. An air spring is fitted alongside the existing leaf or coil spring, and you add pressure to support extra load. The factory spring still does the work when the vehicle is empty; the bag takes up the difference when you load it. Nothing is removed, and the vehicle keeps its standard suspension behaviour unladen.
Full air suspension replaces the coil spring entirely with an air spring. It gives a much wider ride height range and is usually chosen by owners who want adjustability on demand, but it is a bigger install and a bigger commitment.

Rear sag under load. This is the headline benefit. A loaded canopy, a full tray, a heavy towball download or a camper on the back drops the rear of the vehicle. Airbags let you dial the ride height back to level without changing springs.
Headlight aim and steering feel. A sagging rear points the headlights at the trees and lightens the front end. Levelling the vehicle puts the lights back where they belong and restores steering weight and self-centring.
Uneven and changing loads. This is where airbags beat a heavier spring outright. A fixed heavy-duty spring is only correct at one load. Airbags are adjustable, so a vehicle that runs empty during the week and fully loaded on weekends does not have to compromise. You drop pressure back to a minimum when empty and add it when loaded.
Towball download and caravan levelling. A heavy towball weight is a constant, concentrated load right behind the rear axle. Airbags handle that job well, which is why they are so common on caravan tow vehicles. Our guide to suspension for towing a caravan covers the wider setup.
Side-to-side levelling. Dual-control kits let you run different pressures left and right, which is genuinely useful if your load sits off-centre - a single heavy drawer, a water tank, or a slide-out on one side.
Being clear about this saves money and disappointment.
They do not increase your GVM or payload. This is the single most common misunderstanding. Fitting airbags does not raise any legal limit. If you are over GVM, you are over GVM whether the vehicle sits level or not. They do not replace worn shocks. Airbags are springs, not dampers. If the vehicle wallows, floats or keeps bouncing after a bump, that is a damping problem and no amount of air pressure will fix it. Check the signs your 4WD shocks are worn first, and browse shock absorbers if they are due.
They do not fix the wrong spring. If a vehicle carries a permanent, constant load - a steel tray, a long-range tank, a heavy canopy that never comes off - the honest fix is a spring rated for that weight, with airbags on top only if the load still varies. They do not improve unladen ride. A helper kit at minimum pressure is close to neutral. It is not a comfort upgrade.
Leaf spring kits mount the bag between the chassis rail and the axle or spring pack, and are the standard fit for rear-leaf utes. Typical examples include the Ford Ranger Next Gen kit, the Isuzu D-Max 2020-on kit, the D-Max 2012-2020 kit and the Mazda BT-50 2011-2020 kit. Kits are also available for the GWM Cannon and LDV T60.
Coil spring kits fit inside or alongside the coil on wagons and coil-rear utes. Examples include the Isuzu MU-X coil helper kit and the Jeep Wrangler JK kit. Coil kits are generally lower in capacity than leaf kits because the bag has to fit within the coil, so check the rating against your actual load.

This choice matters more than most buyers expect, because it decides how often you will actually adjust the bags.
Schrader valves only. The cheapest option. Two tyre-style valves, usually mounted near the towbar, inflated with a service station hose or a portable compressor. Fine if your load rarely changes. Annoying if it changes weekly.
Onboard compressor with in-cabin control. You adjust pressure from the driver's seat, which means you will actually do it. A dual rocker air control kit gives independent left and right control with an onboard compressor.
App-controlled systems. A wireless app control kit adds phone control and doubles as a tyre inflation system, which removes a separate compressor from the load.
Always keep minimum pressure in the bags. Most kits specify a minimum of around 5 psi even when empty. Running them flat lets the bag fold and chafe, and that is what kills airbags early.
Do not use pressure to hide an overload. Airbags will happily hold a vehicle level that is well over its legal limits. Brakes, tyres, wheel bearings and the chassis are not fooled.
Check clearance after a lift. If you have fitted a suspension lift kit, the bag has more extended length to deal with. Confirm the kit suits your lifted height rather than assuming.
Watch the airlines. The most common failure we see is not the bag - it is a line rubbed through on a chassis rail or melted against an exhaust. Route them properly and secure them at sensible intervals.
Inspect them at every service. Look for chafe marks, check the mounts are tight, and test that both sides hold pressure overnight.
Fit airbags if your load changes and the rear sags when it is on. That is the case they were designed for, and they do it better and more cheaply than anything else.
Fit heavier springs instead if the load is permanent and constant. Fit both if you carry a heavy base load plus a variable one on top, which describes most serious touring setups.
And if the real issue is that you are running out of legal capacity rather than running out of ride height, no spring or bag will solve that. That is a GVM upgrade conversation, and it is worth having before you spend money elsewhere.
