Mitsubishi Pajero Suspension Problems & How to Fix Them

The most commonly reported Mitsubishi Pajero suspension problems are rear sag under touring loads, shock fade on corrugated roads, clunks from strut top mounts and sway bar links, and worn control arm bushes that chew tyres unevenly. Most of these trace back to one design choice: the NM to NW Pajero (2000–2021) runs fully independent suspension front and rear, which is unusual for a 4WD and rewards properly matched springs and shocks.

Unlike most large 4WDs of its era, the Pajero has no solid rear axle. The front uses double wishbones with coil-over struts, and the rear uses a multi-link independent layout with coil springs. That gives it car-like road manners, but it also means the rear coils work through a short travel range and standard springs give up quickly once you add touring weight. Before diving into each problem, it helps to know the warning signs owners commonly report. If any of these sound familiar, your Pajero's suspension is due for attention:

  • The rear sits visibly lower than the front once camping gear or a van is hooked up
  • A floaty, wallowing ride that gets worse the longer you drive on gravel or corrugations
  • Clunks or knocks from the front end over speed bumps, driveways and potholes
  • Feathered or inside-edge wear on the rear tyres between rotations
  • Frequent harsh contact with the bump stops when loaded or towing
  • Headlights aimed high and light, vague steering when the vehicle is packed for a trip

Why does my Pajero sag at the rear when loaded?

Rear sag is the single most commonly reported Pajero suspension complaint in Australia. The multi-link independent rear was tuned for unladen comfort, and because of the suspension geometry the coil compresses less than the body drops — so a modest load produces a visible drop in ride height. Add a drawer system, fridge, water, recovery gear and a full tank, and the rear sits low, the bump stops start working overtime, headlights aim high and the steering goes light.

The fix is springs rated for the weight you actually carry. Shock fade on outback corrugations is commonly reported by Pajero tourers, and it is a heat problem. The oil aerates, damping falls away, and the Pajero starts to float and wander — often just when you are hours from the nearest town.

Foam cell and monotube designs are the standard fixes because both resist aeration far longer. No shock lasts forever on the Gibb River Road or the Oodnadatta Track, but a fade-resistant design driven sensibly will still be working properly at the end of the day, when a hot standard damper has long since given up.

What causes clunks over speed bumps?

A clunk or knock from the front end over speed bumps and driveways is commonly reported across NM through NW Pajeros, and there are three usual suspects. First, the strut top mounts: the rubber mount at the top of each coil-over strut compresses and cracks with age, producing a metallic clunk over bumps and sometimes a creak on full lock. Second, sway bar link ball joints, which knock when one wheel moves and the other does not — exactly what happens over a speed bump taken at an angle. Third, sway bar D-bushes and control arm bushes, which produce a duller knock as they wear.

A workshop can isolate the source quickly by loading each corner and checking for free play. Why is my Pajero wearing tyres unevenly?

Uneven or feathered tyre wear, especially on the rear, usually points to worn suspension bushes rather than the tyres themselves. The rear trailing arm and lower control arm bushes on NS–NW Pajeros are commonly reported wear items, particularly on vehicles that tow. As the rubber softens, the arms shift under load, camber and toe wander away from specification, and the inside edges of the rear tyres wear fast. Up front, worn lower control arm bushes have a similar effect and can add vague, wandering steering.

The fix path is straightforward: have the bushes inspected, replace the worn ones, then get a full wheel alignment. If the springs have sagged below their intended height, geometry is compromised even with fresh bushes — another reason correct-height springs matter on an independently sprung 4WD. Bush replacement requires a press and alignment equipment, so this is a job for a qualified suspension workshop.

Why does my Pajero lean when towing?

Hitch a van behind a Pajero and the ball weight acts behind the rear axle line, levering the rear down and the nose up. On the Pajero's independent rear this squat is commonly reported as more pronounced than owners expect, and it degrades steering feel, headlight aim and stability in one hit. Persistent bottoming on the bump stops while towing is a clear sign the springs and shocks are not up to the job.

Heavy-duty rear springs rated for the ball weight are the foundation. How much lift is legal for a Pajero?

As indicative guidance, most Australian states allow a suspension lift of up to 50 mm without certification under the VSB14 / National Code of Practice framework, and several states allow a total vehicle height increase of up to 75 mm when a modest tyre size increase is combined with the lift. Vehicles with electronic stability control are treated more conservatively in some jurisdictions, and rules differ between states and change over time.

Its commonly reported problem is the same symptom with a different cause: rear sag. The factory rear coils are tuned soft for unladen comfort, so a canopy, drawers and touring gear drop the tail noticeably and the ride turns choppy as the axle spends time near the bump stops.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do Pajero shocks and struts last?

There is no fixed lifespan — it depends on load and terrain. Highway-driven Pajeros may see 80,000–100,000 km from factory dampers, while vehicles that tour on corrugations or tow regularly can tire them much sooner. Floating over undulations, prolonged rocking after bumps and uneven tyre wear are the usual signs they are due.

Why does my Pajero sag on one side?

Uneven sag usually means one coil spring has fatigued more than its pair, often on the side that carries the fuel tank, drawers or a long-range tank. Springs should always be replaced in pairs across an axle, and a workshop should also check the trailing arm bushes, which can mimic spring sag when badly worn.

Can I fix Pajero rear sag with airbags alone?

Air helper springs are a load-assist tool, not a substitute for correctly rated coils. If the springs are fatigued or too soft for a permanent load, fit springs rated for that weight first.
